| Picassos beak and feather |

Here are some pics of picasso showing the affect PBFD has had on his beak making it grow really fast (I have to trim it every week which he is used to now and doesn't kick up a fuss), and his feathers are only partly formed breaking easily. Both have got worse since these photos were taken. Otherwise though he is well and has even put on weight http://i6.photobucket.com/albu.....a47071.jpg

He is getting new feathers now and these ones aren't falling out so hopefully this means he's improving. I go back to the vet this week to see how his tests turned out.[/img] |

Hi Shell!
I don't really know what to say I guess. I feel so bad that you & yours have been stricken with this disease, tho I really don't know too much about it.
But Picasso sure looks good in the photos.
I sure hope you don't mind me asking, but out of curiosity about the disese, other than the beak & feathers, how is his personality, is he acting like he always has, or has the disease affected him that way too? |

Other than his appearance and not eating hard food (I think he has trouble because his beak changes so much) you'd never know he had anything wrong with him, he is still the most well behaved, curious, playful, sooky bird I've ever seen, as long as he doesn't have any other problems and all I have to worry about is how he looks I'll be very happy. |

Aww, that's good to hear. And no, I wouldn't worry about his appearance either. Well, he must not have too much problem eating if he's gaining weight, & that's so good to hear too.
You know me & my guys wish only the very best for you two! Our hugs to both of you |

We went to the vet today. He said the test results were not good, his beak and feather is full blown so I can expect to see all the syptoms. Good news though is that he is otherwise healthy, the vet said if he makes it past a year with PBFD his chances of living 40 or so years are good since they usually lose the ones that won't make it within that first year. There is a new treatment being trialled that he is going to find out about for me, it's expensive, around $1000 and is an immune system booster, he doesn't think Picasso will get much benifit from it since he is doing well enough without it and it only seems to have worked on certain candidates so we are going to wait till something suitable is available. The vet said he looks happy and that apart from a bit of sensitivity with his beak and all the extra blood feathers he is not suffering in any way. We should know after his next molt in February if he will go bald or not. |

We went to the vet today. His test results were bad, he has fully blown PBFD but the good news is he is healthy otherwise and the vet says he is happy and looks good considering he's supposed to look worse. He said other than a bit of sensitivity with his beak and blood feathers he is not suffering which I was worrying about. He is going to find out more about a new treatment they are trialling at the moment, so far Picasso's not a good candidate and probably won't get benifit from it. If I can get him past the infected for one year mark his chances of living another 40 years or so are good. So far so good. |

Shell I'm keeping my fingers crossed for you and Picasso that he'll make it past the year and of course many more years to come. He seems like a fighter, I'm sure he'll make it |

Shell, all my fingers are crossed for you and picasso as well that he'll live a long life with you. I have to say though he's looking quite adorable in those photos. |

Shell, I will keep you in my thoughts.. I truely hope that Picasso will stay with you for a long long time..
So sad to hear that his feathers are breaking so fast and that his beak grows so fast..
The second photo does show (If I can say so) that he still has the same adorable look! |

Yeah, he's still adorable, his personality hasn't changed one bit through the whole thing. He eats lots when he's out of his cage so I'm thankful for the galah in him since he doesn't touch anything but his vegies when he's in his cage. It's funny to see him when he eats, he loves pasta and scoffs down about a cup full in one sitting till he can't eat any more, then he sits on me and rolls his eyes when I scratch his crop, so cute. The wild galahs here eat up all the grain spilt from the grain trucks on the highway, they end up so fat and stuffed they can't move. I hope he's going to be ok, he's looking really scruffy now but at least I know he won't starve! |

Well it's nearly February, Picasso has stopped molting and he is all pin feathers. Looks like some of them may be ok but lots of them are not properly formed and fall out before they have even opened up, around his neck looks ok, his breast feathers are few and far between and his flight and crest feathers never seem to make it past pin stage before they narrow at the base and break off or go hard and stop growing.
He's super sensitive at the moment, all itchy and grumpy but still playful and eating well. Hates his bath now too, boy does he pout if he gets wet which is a shame since it's summer and I like to bath him to help relieve his symptoms, so pout he does.
His beak is now overgrown on the bottom instead of the top like it was last year and he won't let me trim it anymore but it is not as soft or brittle as last year and he's started trying to eat seed again although without much success.
He's not due to go back to the vet till the end of the year, so far he's survived about 7 months since his diagnosis but I am none the wiser as to how he will go in the future, I was hoping by now his new feathers would have grown in but I'm still waiting, has everyone elses toos finished their molt cycle yet? |

Shells, my heart breaks when I read this.. I too would have hoped him to get new feathers..
Good to hear about his beak though.. That it's not so soft and brittle anymore.
Unfortunately, I don't know about the cycle, I never pay great attention to their molting cycles??
Sorry I can't be of any help.. |
