Hi Scatnat...
She has got scaley face, I can't see her feet, so I can't tell you if she has scaley feet as well... These are mites that dig tunnels in the face/beak area, if left untreated, she'll look like some alien from outer space.
Treatments are fairly easy if you can find a avian vet that sells invermectin. That's a drop on mite treatment (like those cat's drop on flea treatment but for birds) Please if you can't find it, don't use the cats treatment. not made for birds. If you can't find invermectin, there are other ways of getting rid of scaley face. You can get treatments cream/oil thing that you put on the beak twice a day, and this is meant to use to cover the mites tunnels and smother them. some people use unscented baby oil for that. But best you go to an avian vet, or a bird dealer to get the the treatment. If you can't find anything for treatment, avian vets also has shots of the invermectin for scaleys. I guess if you aren't comfortable enough about treating your birds, please take her to the vet..
And oh, she can be a he.. I mean, it's possible that all that brown stuff on her cere are actually stuff from the scaley face.. but then again, her cere doesn't look bright blue enough to be a boy.. |

Cheeta, does scaley face also cause the feather abnormalities on the bird's back? |

no, not that I know off... My guess with the feathers is that the folicles were damaged as a youngster, most likely due to it's mother plucking it's feathers. I have four budgies that were pluck by the same mother, and one of them has funny looking feathers on her wings and back. the other just doesn't have all their feathers in with a few little 'twisty' feathers.
Or she may have had pulpitus (spelling??) as a youngster as well, some young ones just never really 'get over it'.. and they'll constantly produce funny feathers, and drop their flight and tail feathers. Those are are known as 'runner budgies' as it can never fly because of the disease.
I just really think much of the feathers on the back when I saw the pics because I have a budgie that is similar, though not as badly curled and stuck out as that. She's healthy though. |

oh another posible reason for the feathers on the back is French molt, but it doesn't look like it is as the other feathers are quite ok. |

Ok i have coated the effected areas in vaseline and given her lots of attention and she seems to have perked up already
Having read the last couple of post i have to agree that i think the damaged feathers are more deformed then they are damaged, they have that twisted feel to them, anyway they are damaged enough that she has limited flight.
She seems to be quite tame and already shuts her eyes and quietly chirps when you talk to her. Oh and on the subject of 'her', i have to agree cheeta, she could be a he under all that nasty crust!! watch this space for the results
Anyway im goin to try and treat the mites myself but if i dont see any improvment in 4-5 days im taking her to see our local avian vet. Thanks Cheeta for your words of wisdom, your a star |

Ok I have been applying vaseline to the effected areas for 3 days now and there is a marked improvement.
Not only has she turned into a he , now all the crusts are off his cere but he has also perked up alot, no longer depressed in the corner.
He has eaten all the vitamin laced seeds and looks so much better.
Thanks for all the advice , ill keep you posted on his progress, oh by the way we have called him 'ponchito' my boyfriends suggestion |

Hey, that's great to hear. I'm glad that this little one is coming along nicely. Keep applying those vaseline to the beak. What about the feet? does it look dry and scaley as well? some times they affect the feet as well...
Sounds like you're doing a wonderful job for this little guy.. oh, just on the male thing.. female can get blue cere as well, but generally their's much lighter and also has creamy white around the nostril area. This happen sometimes when they are out of breeding conditions. |
