the other day i noticed that it looked like spike was having trouble breathing. so the ext day i went to an avian to have him checked out. and it turns out that spike has beak and feather disease.
is there anychance that he will survive it? and should i stop handling him or anything? i am already keeping him warm and he has planty of fresh food and water.
lastly i have read on a few sites that people euthanase birds with beak and feather because it can cause a lot of pain as the bird gets older. is this something i will have to think about?
thanks |

I'm very sorry to hear of your teils beak and feather disease Shells Picasso's tiel has it too. She would be able to help you the most with this. Maybe you can send her a PM. She hasn't been on in a while and a PM should come up on her home e-mail. She'll definately have some answers for you. You can also check out her diary and homepage. I'm very sorry to hear of your devistating news Please keep us posted. |

Oh, I'm very sorry to hear this too
I agree with CM, Shells would be able to give you lots of info, I'm sure. I know very, very little about it myself.
I did notice on your homepage that you were considering getting a GC conure. I would difinitely not consider bringing another bird home now.
Can I ask how old Spike is? |

I'm so sorry to hear this.. Beak and feather disease can be diagnozed by blood tests from what I know. (Certain results)
If your birdy has strange feathers, they can certainly suspect PBFD..
PBFD cannot be cured yet though birds can live quite long before the disease takes its toll.
It's very contagious. It's spread also by feather dust. |

Oh Thunil. I'm so sorry to hear that your little Spike has PBFD...
Unfortunately there's no cure for PBFD. So until your Spike passes (sorry), I would strongly recommend not getting any bird at all. PBFD are very contagious. It can be in the environment for a long time even after the bird is gone. How old is Spike? and are you 100% sure that he's got PBFD??? I mean is the avian vet 100% certain of it? It is very unfortunate if he has it. Some birds will leave a normal life with PBFD, but more I think don't make it pass the first year of contracting the disease. I'm so sorry. |

Just to clear something up... Shells's Picasso is actually a 'giant tiel'!! LOL.. sorry.. I had to do it.. He's actually a cross between a galah and a sulphur crested cockatoo. He does look like a cockatiel though.. hehe |
