Thank you Fi We are hanging in there. Walnut has been through a lot, but she's a tough cookie, and I'm sure she will be just fine. |

Oh, Shirin, I feel for you and Walnut! I hope all turns out well.
I hope that Walnut's problem is a pulled muscle, but if it isn't, I thought I'd better tell you... I was researching something else yesterday and, several times, happened across a tidbit about soy-- Unless it is fermented, soy prevents some nutrients from being properly utilized by the body, causing deficiencies. It contains oxalates which combine with calcium... it can cause kidney damage... It occurred to me that some breeds of parrotlets get kidney troubles if they are on a pellet diet, and that most pellets contain soy. Just something to consider
Hang in there! I know how stressful it is to wait for results. We are all hoping for the best. |

Thanks Meg for the tip about soy, and also for your kind words
As far as Walnut, she doesn't eat anything with soy in it, her main diet is seed. But it's definitely something to consider for the others, and for myself as well. I'm a vegetarian and I eat quite a bit of soy daily |

Me, too. However, I have decided to limit my soy intake to fermented soy products like tempeh and miso because of what I have learned. A percent of every bushel of soybeans sold goes to a soy council to advertise the benefits of soy, so that is why we never hear about its dangers. They are very aggressive in their advertising, so you don't know the other side until you research the scientific literature.
Still hoping for the best for Walnut... |

I'm so not surprised about this just like with dairy. In the end money always takes precedence over people's health. |

Ok, so the vet called. She said that blood results showed that Walnuts platelets are extremely low. Like normal levels are supposed to be 30 and hers is 1 She said that we need to get her on antibiotics, however it may be a viral infection.
Her kidney function came out to be normal, but she said that kidney problems don't always show up on a blood test. She said something like for it to show up on blood results 2/3rds of the kidney has to be affected or something like that. So basically it's not clear yet what is causing her paralysis and whether or not she has kidney disease.
Basically I have to give her the antibiotics for about a week, then schedual another appointment for her to be checked again, and I guess we'll take it from there. |

Will doves eat seed that had begun to sprout? That would be a way of adding extra nutrients to her diet. Also, raw, organic apple cider vinegar would have probiotics in it which might help.
Hang in there. |

I haven't tried sprouting seeds, but I will start today, it's worth a shot. I have some apple cider vinager too, I will add it to her water. Thanks a lot for all of your help, it means a lot. |

| UPDATE |
|
|
IT'S A MIRACLE!!!!!! Walnut is walking!!!!!!!!!!!!!
I'd noticed a couple of days ago, she seemed to have better use of her leg, instead of it just hanging behind her , she was able to lift it and place it on the perch, but she still had no use of her toes and could not wrap her toes around the perch. Today she seems to be able to perch perfectly!!! So I let her out of the cage, and while she was on the floor, she not only walked quite a distance, but she ran!!!! Without even limping! I am SO HAPPY and EXCITED!!!!
So I'm wondering if perhaps it is a bacterial infection that she has, and perhaps that infection affected her kidney, causing it to swell and press on the sciatic nerve. I read on this page http://www.peteducation.com/ar.....cleid=3314 that kidney problems can be caused by bacterial infections. The reason I'm guessing it's that is because as soon as I started giving her the antibiotics is when I noticed her getting use of her leg back.
So anyway, we're still gonna go for a follow up with the vet, and I'm still giving her her medication twice a day, for another 4-5 days, but things are looking well
I have a feeling I know how she may have gotten a bacterial infection. The only thing I can think of is the water dish. I wash it daily and change the water at least 3 times a day, but because of the shape of it, it's very hard to wash. Look: http://www.hagen.com/usa/birds.....2650020101 I often have to scrub the corners very hard because it's just awkwrd to get the sponge in there. You know, as opposed to a round dish that's really easy to wash. I don't know, that's the only thing that I can think of, because everything else is clean, and she doesn't go outside.
If you guys can think of any other ways she could have gotten a bacterial infection please tell me, I don't want this to ever happen again |
