| World Bank issues warning |

the World Bank has just issued a warning about the financial effects of a bird flu pandemic...
World Bank warns of economic fallout
Is this a worst case scenario or a realistic view on what could happen? |

M'm.. I don't think it's realistic. None of the things that they predicted would happen by now has happened. In fact I haven't heard a word about the bird flue on the news for months, now that they have more important things to talk about like Brad and Angelina's baby |

What is supposed to cause this big economic decline? The drug companies and the doctors will certainly have brisk business if they can keep the public scared enough. Other industries stand to profit as well. (Did you notice the ads on the page?) People will be brainwashed to soak their homes and workplaces with toxic, germ-killing chemicals; and may even be coaxed to stock up on food, water, paper plates, paper towels, over-the-counter medications, face masks, plastic gloves, disinfectants, and whatever else the advertisers say we need. Sales for home theater systems, cable TV, popcorn, and ice cream ought to boom.
I am being a smart aleck. I can see how city-wide quarentines and shut-downs of major industries for the safety of the employees could disrupt the economy. However, I do believe that panic and thoughtlessness cause a lot of unnecessary trouble. If we all take the age-old preventive advice about washing our hands, not touching our faces, covering our mouths when we cough or sneeze, going to bed when we feel sick, and staying home until we are well, the flu may not spread as badly as predicted. If we all are careful to eat right and build up our health, the virus won't find as many susceptable individuals. I think Swine Flu was the last predicted pandemic, and it didn't amount to much. The bird flu may not be "the one" either. |
