| New Baby!!! |
|
|
Fenton (whom I realized is a girl just recently) and Marla (yep, a guy) fell inlove shortly after meeting. Fenton's been laying eggs for a couple months now but none have ever hatched. I stopped considering the chance that they might. So I was opening their cage today and Fenton was excited to actually leave the nest (since she started egg laying, she was sitting on them constantly, never wanting to come out). So I glanced in the nest and see this big hairy thing.... A New Dove baby! I'm very new to this experience but judging by the baby's size in relation to the size of the eggs, it seems like it's been hatched for a little while now, maybe five or six days. Also, it's eyes are open already. I tried doing some investigating about what I should do but have come across very little information. Anyway, I really hope the baby is healthy!! |

Yey!!! Congratulations!!! You don't have to do anything Doves are really good parents and they take care of everything. Have you noticed Fenton and Marla taking turns to brood the baby? By the way, was there a 2nd egg that didn't hatch? Just provide them with good food and some extra calcium and they'll be fine on their own. What kind of nest do they have? They really like making their nest themselves, even if it's a store bought nest. I put some hay (from rabbit feed section of petstore) on the bottom of their cage, and my male goes and retrieves the hay sticks one by one and brings them to the famle and she tucks them under her it's so cute. I'm so excited for you! Please share pictures!! |

Thanks for all the responses! Shirin, yes I've noticed them taking turns brooding the baby. They're very protective too and seem like great parents. There was another egg but they pushed it out of the nest and cracked it before this one hatched. They did that with most of the eggs, that's why I wasn't expecting any babies. The nest isn't exactly a great one because it was the result of an emergency trip to the nearest pet store when I started suspecting that Fenton might start laying eggs (and she did that night!) The only one I could find large enough for her was a plastic gerbil/small bunny nest. They loved the nest actually but didn't like the nesting material I bought for them. It was little pieces of cotton, so maybe I should try straw. I'll post pictures of the baby very soon! |

I actually don't use an actual nest. Mine started laying eggs in their food dish, it's big, so I just lined that with a rag just to make it soft, and then gave them the rabbit hay and they brought the hay to the bowl themsleves and covered the cloth
Can't wait to see pictures!!! |
