Pigeon with dragging wing?  Reply with quote

Hi,

I usually post on the Dutch forum but Fluffy Sue suggested I post my question here. She thought Shirin in particular might be able to help me, since she has ornithology classes.

Outside the local Ikea store I saw a pigeon with the tip of his right wing dragging along the ground. The wing was folded neatly against his body, but it angled down and the tip dragged along the ground. I tried throwing my jacket over it to catch it so I could see what was wrong, but when I did it flew up.

The wing can't have been broken, otherwise the pigeon wouldn't have been able to fly up. But something must have been wrong, since the wing was dragging along the ground.

So does anyone have an idea what the problem might have been?

Thanks!

Hi there Smile

If he was able to fly fine, and you didn't see any obvious signs of injury, like blood, then you're right the wing is most likely not broken.

By the wing dragging along the ground, do you mean just the tip of the primary feathers? And was it just one wing, or both?

It could be that he strained a muscle. This has happened to my doves before. It could also just be lazyness. My doves sometimes walk around like that when they're relaxed, usually it's both wings though, so if it was just one wing, my guess is he just strained it. But as long as he can fly, he should be fine.

By the way, thank you for being concerned about the little guy Smile Pigeons don't have a lot of fans as I'm sure you know, and they really need compassionate people such as yourself to watch out for them every once in a while Wink

It was only the right wing, the left was fine. He dragged the tip of the flying feathers on the ground, but the main body of the wing was folded neatly against the body.

Yeah, sounds like it was just strained. In my doves, it resolved itself within a couple of days.

That's good to hear, that it'll fix itself in a few days.
