| Pining or sick? Or both? |
|
|
We had a really cold night at the end of last week and one of my diamond doves died (as well as one of my quails). I felt so bad. I found the dove on the verge of death and put her in my hotbox thingy but it wasnt enough and she died. The male isnt looking too well atm either. I have set up a smaller cage for him indoors for nighttime. Im not sure if he has a cold or if he is pining for his mate but he tends to sit in one of his baskets for most of the day all fluffed up. Im a little worried about him. Im not sure whether to keep bringing him inside at night and taking him out during the day or wether to keep him in for a few days. Im feeding him extra in the way of vitamin fortified softfood to help boost him. I want to get him a new mate but I cant till next season. Poor boy. I have to bring all the birds inside except for the 6 male quail in the shed and my indian ringneck, I have a whole room devoted to it. |

Sorry to hear this Annabelle It's sounds to me like he's sick. Can you bring him inside for a few days and keep a close eye on him? And I would say if things don't improve he'll have to be seen by a vet. Also, do you have a scale so you could monitor his weight? Sick birds can lose weight pretty rapidly, and since these guys are so small already, it's really dangerous for them. It could be something that's easily treatable. One of my diamond doves was very sick recently, she had become paralyzed in the leg, and lost weight, and was acting very lethargic and puffed up all day long. But a simple course of antibiotics made her all better in a matter of 7 days.
Either way, even if you can't take him to a vet, I would recommend to definitely seperate him from the other birds for a while and keep him inside. He should be kept extra warm with a heat lamp.
I really hope he gets better, or that it is just a case of grieving for his mate. Hang in there. |

Yeah, I left him inside for yesterday and he was looking heaps better this morning. I put him outside for a little while this morning as the sun was out and it was warm and he has perked right up. I'll keep him inside and monitor him carefully for the rest of the week and see how he is doing then make a call after that. Thanx for the advice. |

He's doing heaps better now. He looks like he's back to normal. I'm quite relieved about it. Im going to bring him inside on the really cold nights still so he wont start looking sick again. Overall though, he is doing well. |

sorry I haven't read much of the forum.
Just got caught up with this thread. I'm glad to read that your little baby is doing better. Here's hoping it's going to get better from now on.
Take care |

Just thought Id post a quick update. I have been keeping a really close eye on him and he is doing really well. He looks really healthy now. Still a tad mopey sometimes like he is waiting for him mate to come back. Overall tho, he is doing well. I'll try and get him a new mate when the next season for them comes up. Thanx for all your concern and advice, it has helped. |
