goose problem  Reply with quote

Hi, my first post here, I was wondering if anyone could help me with this. I have 2 geese ( a male and a female) and a couple of weeks ago, I noticed that the male was having problems swallowing, and his face was swollen, and he had a lump under his chin, and his eyes looked bleary, he had just lost his spark. We took him to a vet, and he gave us some antibiotics, and liquid parafin, incase of congestion.

This didn't work, so we took him to a different vet who put a camera inside him, and X rayed him, and found nothing. He thought it might be zinc poisoning, so he gave him an injection for that, and he took a blood sample. When the results from the blood test came back, no trace of zince could be found, so it isn't zinc poisoning, but the vet said the blood was very fatty.

He gave us some antibiotics to give him, but these have proved so far unsuccessful. Does anyone know what my goose could be suffering from?

Hi there, welcome to fluffies.
I'm sorry to hear about your goose.. Sad I don't know anything about geese, just that they're cute..
(What are their names by the way?)
Did you see avian vets?

The first vet we took him to was just an ordinary vet, but the second vet was an avian expert, and he couldn't work out whats wrong with him.

My geese don't have names lol, we were going to have them to eat but after a while they really grew on us. They make really good pets.

Sad Oh I'm so sorry that your goose isn't doing too well. I don't have any experience with geese either, but there is a lady here who has a goose/duck rescue, she might know what the problem is. I'm so surprised that the vets didn't find anything Rolling Eyes

One thing I can think of, because one of my doves had the same symptoms, could it be that he might have a vitamin A difficiency? Because my dove had that, and she also had a swollen chin and had a hard time swallowing.. although that's something that an avian vet should recognize easily, so I don't know.

I wonder why vets are so quick to perscribe antibiotics when they don't even know what the illness is Rolling Eyes my vet did that too.

Thanks for the responses. I think it could be vitamin A defienency that he's suffering from, I checked the symptoms. I checked what foods are high in vitamin A, such as eggs, so I gave him 2 of those today, but I also bought some vitamin supplements, so i'll be giving him those in future instead of eggs, as they are quite fatty.

Thanks for the help.

Goosemaster.. I don't know about geese but do they also eat dandelion? It's quite high in betacaroten if I'm correct! (Pro vitamin A)

Oh, hopefully it's just that! If so, it is easily treatable Smile Another thing you can do is add one drop of cod liver oil to his feed just once a week. That's very vaitamin A rich also Smile

The thing I forgot to mention is that for some reason, he hasn't been tipping his head back when he tries to drink/eat, so all of the feeding has to be done manually.

Well I'm starting to think he's not going to get any better from whatever's wrong with him- even though he's only been on vitamins for a day.

I'm going to carry on giving him the vitamins & anti biotics every day, and if that doesn't work, he might have to be put down. Crying or Very sad

Sad goosemaster, I am so sorry to hear of your goose's problem. I hope he does get better and that you don't have to put him down. Give him a fighting chance before making that decision. Do you have pics of your geese? Would love to see them.

Well unfortunately, we had to have him put down today, as his condition was getting worse, he was making croaking noises when he was trying to breathe, and he kept on shaking saliva out of his mouth, he was very ill.
