| possible new duck pond!!!!!! |
|
|
My parents and I have decided to turn our back acre into an animal paradise!!
a huge garden with a nice big aviary for the fids.....
we are also thinking about putting in a duck pond!!!!
I have probably the dumbest question anyone has ever heard!
but IF we do in fact do that, will the ducks return after flying south for the winter?....
yeah...I know....dumb, but it would be silly to buy ducks to just have them never come back, ya know?!
or what do all y'all ducky owners do?
and any adivce on designs, foods, all that jazz would be great too....
and what kind of fish do duckies like to feed on? we'd add some fish if it would make the ducks happy.... |

Are you planning on getting wild ducks, or domesticated ducks?
If you get domesticated ducks, they can't migrate on their own, if no one has taught them where to go. That's why in conservation programs they have the migrating birds follow a plane or something to their wintering grounds. If they try, they will more than likely die or get lost in the way, so you best keep them in an aviary.
If you're just building a pond for the wild ducks to be attracted to it, then they will return if they have successfully bred in your land, and if food is plenty. |

I think we'd let wild ducks just use it then....
I wanted to get some lil baby ducks and raise them up....but I'll have to talk to the parentals about the aviary for them....
would it be one like for the fids? or what exactly would it entail? |

I would ask Dana about that, I'm not really sure what her enclosure is like. But yeah, if you get little babies, and they become imprinted on you, there's no way they would survive in the wild, unless you fly with them and teach them where to migrate to
Sorry to be totally ignorant, but does it get really cold where you live? You have actual winters? sorry, I know some parts of the US it's always warm... |

okay.....
I'll ask her about it.
it does get cold around here....but I think if we did get lil ducks they could stay in our heated barn during the winter....unless that would be, like, not nice or something |

That would be a cool idea, Lynzi! Unfortunately, I cannot help you out here. I'm sure Dana or someone else will! |

Ok first what kind of ducks? All ducks do not migrate. Wild do but domestic don't. Wild you cannot keep. So decide on what type of domestic ducks you want and go from there. Can I recommend tht you go on line and try to fine ducks in need of a home ( duck rescue) and start with them. Many people get ducks when they are small and then when they grow up they don't want them any more and abandond them in city ponds ( which is against the law).
Now let's say you adopted a nice pair of ducks and now are ready to enoy your pond. You will need the pond fenced in to keep other animals from getting them in the day and at night. In the day all 34 of mine are able to go and come from the horse pasture to graze. Then in the evening they come into the area where the pool is which has a deck that they can also get under. There in no top over tthe pen because it is really a yard and is too big to be covered. They ar up close to my house right out my back door
so I don't have a problem with fox or any thing getting them.
If you are just gonna have a few (2-3)then you might want to buy one of the large dog kennels and fence around the edges and the bottom and let your ducks stay in there at night. You can put tops on those.
If you need any idea I'll be happy to help you. If you would like to see our "Happy Endings Goose & Duck Sanctuary" I'll be happy to send you pic of how it looks. And that shed would be nice in the winter but that is left up to you. Really a wind break is all they need down her ein Florida sbut where you are yep that would be nice to be warm and cozy in the hard winters you all have. |

Thanks so much for all that info!!
my parents are still trying to decide if they want domestic ducks or if they just want to provide an area for the wild ones.....
if we did decide to go the domestic route we'd get the pond built and established and introduce the ducks next spring....
Those parents.....they take such a long time to make up their minds...heehee |
