baby female eclectus parrot  Reply with quote

Does anyone know how to stop my eclectus parrot from biting. When I stick my hand in her cage for her to step up she charges me and bites really hard. My breeder said for me to give her avicalm is that good and will it work. When she flys from her cage and you go and pick her up she will charge you and bite you.

Hi. I have a 14 week old Male Eclectus and he was a bit bitey when I got him home. What i did worked and he no longer bites me and it worked within the first 24 hours - no drugs or vitamins.

What I did was this:
I took two chopstiks or you could use perches and used them as my hands to pat each side of the bird one after the other. If he bit at the chopstik i'd not allow him to get leverage on it at all. What this does is show the bird that biting is not going to do him any good because it's not hurting. After a while (about 5 mins for my bird) I moved my hand closer to him up the chopstik, until I could sneak a finger in there and actually pat him.

Now, he doesn't even try to bite because he realises that it's nice to be touched, I was gentle and patient and I didn't have to wait very long at all before I could pet him. Every now and then he/she will lunge at you to bite, usually they do this as a warning. He/she may want to be left alone and may not like people just yet. But persist because the reward is much greater than your current frustration.

Let me know how you go. Check out Oliver's homepage and diary. His diary has some good information there about how he adapted to me.

Hope this helps you out. Good luck and stay with it. Vitamins and drugs for this breed of bird can be very harmful if not given correctly and if you feed your bird properly, with the foods they would eat in the wild, then your bird should not need any of that other crap. Up to you but be careful, it's really easy to do more harm than good.

Thanks for the reply, but Rosie is doing so well. She does not bite anymore, we worked with her without any drugs. She does the funniest thing. I have dogs and if I sit in the livingroom and eat anything the dogs will sit in front of me and beg. Now she climbs down her cage and sits with the dogs begging. And if the dogs have a chew bone she climbs down and takes it from them. She eats like a pig, she loves all of her food. She loves to sit on the counter watching me do dishes. I bought her a big stuffed cow, when you push on the foot it sings and dances. She watched me the first time and now she is always turning the foot on, boy is she smart. She doesn't like to be cuddled or petted much, she likes to do her own thing. Well thanks for the reply and good luck with your ekkie.

About Rosie  Reply with quote

Hi and yeah I only just bothered to notice the date you left your original message but I'm glad to hear that Rosie is doing so very well, smart little girl.Very Happy She sounds like a real character, pity she's not into snuggles though, I love Oliver snuggling with me in our lounge. It's our really special time. It's great how they love to be a part of what we do each day isn't it? Something simple like washing the dishes and especially cutting up food!! They really do enjoy being around us, it's a great honor. I just went to Rosie's homepage but you don't have any photos of her???. Well take care Catch 'ya later.
