I didn't really know where to put this but I was wondering if anybody knew if Eclectus parrots made good pets and if they had any bad habits. I think they are so beautiful but i dont really hear much about them on hear or in pet shops I would love to get one after uni but it would require a lot of research

I don't know much about them either Gemma, but they are very stunning looking birds! I have heard different things about them, so I guess it mostly depnds on how they are raised.
I do think they are becoming more & more popular as companion parrots & being bred & made available more than they once were |

Do you have any idea of the noise they make because that would be my biggest concern

ecclectus are gorgeous birds... I play with the ones in the bird shops here, but they are a bit shy even though they are suppose to be handtamed.
They can make some pretty loud noises when they want to, but generally I hear that they are ok with noise. Again, that's probably how they are raised as well.
Ekkie apparently are really good talkers, some say if you can't get an african grey, get an ekkie. but I don't know how true that is either. |

I would love to have an Ekkie.....
I just can't ever seem to find any for sale!!
and I'm pretty certain I don't want to buy from a pet store....
I've had some bad experiences with store bought pets....
and I'm not sure I want to go through THAT again....
they sure are GORGEOUS!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! |

I know what you mean about the store bought thing I was sooooo lucky with Poppet He dosn't make any noise he dosn't bite and he was only about 15 weeks old I thought that Poppet was the norm and then after coming here and getting Merlin I realised what a great bird Poppet was
If I ever did get an Ekkie I would get a bird from a breeder however I dont know wether I would get a hand reared bird or a socialised bird as I read in Parrot Magazine that pulling chicks from the nestbox can be the cause of a lot of behaivioural problems

If I could find a parent raised-"hand happy" baby that would be ideal....but I think with the larger birds....breeders are more apt to pull from the nest either to encourage more babies....or to make sure they can sell them.... ....I would let the mom's and dad's raise the babies...unless they weren't doing too well...and I'd buy a baby from the same situation. |

I think the ideal situation would be if the breeder would let the bird parents raise the babies, but also give them a lot of human contact & interaction.
Tho, I do realize that the "ideal" doesn't alwyas work out. |
