Eclectus personality  Reply with quote

My Eclectus is a cuddle bear. He loves to sit with me and watch TV or work on the computer. He likes gentle rubs with the feather growth, not against the feathers like many birds seems to enjoy. I have read someplace that Eclectus do not like to have their feather disturbed.

Linus is my first parrot, so I never know if his behavior is normal or not

I have read that Eclectus parrots tend to day-dream. Often Linus seems far away, even when he is looking right at me. I got a couple of bad bites early on when i reached for him and surprised him. Now I call his name and wait until He seems to recognize me before I reach for him.

The breeder who I got Linus from said that they tend to think things over befor acting. So when I say "step-up" he sits and looks at my hand a few seconds like he is trying to decide what to do next.

He always reaches with his beak before stepping up. The breeder said he was testing the perch to see if it was steady before stepping onto it.

Eclectus are really smart. Linus does not talk much but he can figure out a puzzle so fast I am amazed. I have heard of other Eclectus that talk guite alot.
I believe Linus does not talk alot because I do no talk alot. I live alone (except for the bird) so there are never ordinary conversations going on.

I have also read that Eclectus are not very active. My Linus is always playing with something. He hangs upside down flapping his wings to make the swing swril in circles or climbs around his cagedoing flips around the perch.

He does not make alot of noise usually. He chatters in a quiet voice to himself alot. He does scream abit in the morning when I uncover his cage and again near sun set. Or if he his really excited on his swing.

wow, thanks for the info Genny.

I think now I know why the ekkies down near my bird shop is just so aloof. It's probably day dreaming away!! LOL.

Thanks once again for sharing your experience with the eclectus parrots. Smile

Cheers

I've read in different places that Eclectus are one of the smartest parrots, right up there with the African Grey, and can aquire an extensive vocabulary. No wonder Linus is good at puzzles Very Happy

I love eclectus parrots, Very Happy as I said before I almost got one till I saw my Picasso. They are very intelligent you can see it in their eyes. I talk to Picasso like he's another person (much to the "my god I think she's on serious drugs" reaction of onlookers) I'd talk to Linus and explain things to him as you do them to give him something to think about and to learn what sounds are associated with what actions, after a while you might begin to see him associate words and actions, the eclectus are known to have cognitive speach quite early, lots of OMG baby moments coming your way Mr. Green

I will second that ekkies are extremely intelligent. I have owned many different birds, from 'toos (3 of them) ringneck, budgies, tiels, finches and canaries (can't think of any others at the moment). My ekkie is by far the most intelligent. She talks extremely well and even puts things into context at times. she is only 16 months old and was saying hello at 4 months when I brought her home. Within 3 weeks she was saying, "good girl, what ya doing, what's your name, Roy, how' that happen, and Im sorry". She has increased her vocabulary so much now. I put her in the lounge room a few weeks ago on her tstand and she was facing the fish tank (which I have owned for many years) and she looked at it and said "wow" like she had just seen it and liked it. A few weeks ago I was also bashing some frozen passionfruit out of the icemaker, Skye heard the noise and decided someone must be injured with all that noise and yelled "ouch". We were playing hide and seek with my 3 year old - we hide him and find him. LOL. Well I hid him behind Skyes cage while the 15 year old daughter pretended to find him. She was yelling, "where are you" and he was yelling back "I here". Skye turned around in her cage, looked down at the 3 year old and said "hello, I here", then "laughed at him". We cracked up laughing because the bird just "dobbed" on him. (told us where he was) LOL. I can ask her "what's a puppy dog say" and quite often she will say "woof woof". she also says "I love you - kiss kiss" and many many other things. Oh also one night I forgot to say goodnight to my birds. We got to the bedroom door and heard Skye say "goodnight" back to us.
Skye is not a cuddle bug like the 'toos I have owned, but I have heard that quite often the males can be. But she does love to sit with me and preen herself and talk to me and rub her face/beak against my face, nibble my neck and ears. Ekkies are a lovely bird, and yes they can appear aloof especially if they do not know you. I actually say that Skye is "wary" of strangers. She will go to anybody, but is more wary of people she does not know. She loves to come out with us. I have a harness for outings and a travel cage.

I have also read that ekkies are up there with intelligence and talkability with the greys and 'zons. That they are actually rivalling the greys for talkability and intelligence. If Skye is anything to go by then i believe it. I have also started to clicker train her and she does retrieve a ball back to my hand, put a block into a container, hi five with her foot to my hand, shake hands with other foot, turn around on the spot and I am working on waving bye with one wing.

I have had the pleasure of owning two female red sided eclectus, but unfortunately I lost them both. The first one Porschia I lost to a fluke of nature which just about destroyed me. She was the most lovable, gentle parrot I have ever owned. Which in my mind blows the theory that the females are aggressive right out of the water. She never did talk much but you only had to look into her eyes and see the intelligence there. She wasn't ever very playful but she was always very loving and always wanted lots of attention. In addition to the four I have now, I also owned a quaker and two CAGs. (greys) The second one I had was also a female and she was also very cuddly. She had to be uthanized (sp?) due to what we believe may have been a birth defect. In any case I currently have a 6 month old male (Kodah) who is action packed. He is truly the busiest bird I have ever seen. On top of driving my Amazon crazy, which he is doing as I type. He is not however a snuggler, at least not yet. It could be that he is too busy seeing what havoc he can cause. But boy do I love him! Eclectus truly are one of the most beautiful, intelligent parrot species that I have ever been lucky enough to own.

Waahh! I want one! Crying or Very sad

I can't have one right now tho..I've been told by a avian shelter owner male ekkies make the best pets..They are sooo cool! Again..I want one!!

The screaming at the time you described is normal. Parrots scream in the morning to say its a new day and they made it thru the night. I guess at night to say its bed time and they made it thru the day! Laughing thats how they do it in the wild.

So your ekkie loves to dangle from toys? My senegal parrot will hang from his bell with his beak and wing around Laughing , its cute to see his lil body dangeling Very Happy

Sounds like ekkies are great birds. I would be nice to have some more ekkie parronts on here..
