| New To Eclectus.......please help! |
|
|
Hi, I'm pretty new to all this but at the place where i work we have an Eclectus called Casper. I wanted to buy him as he's hand tame and he's still only very young.
The problem i have with not buying him is that i'm worroed about how much time he'd be able to spend on his own. The reason i ask is because i was thinking if i'm working full time i'd be away throughout the day so just need some help clearing this up. Thanks |

My honest opinion is as long as he gets to spend some quality out of cage time with you everyday then it should not matter if you work full time. I am lucky and am a housewife (no time for work outside the house anyway with 4 kids still living at home). If it were me, then I would clean his cage and prepare it first thing in the morning (this is just what "I" would do), then let him sit on his playstand or tstand and have breakfast with you. Maybe have a little together time with him on your shoulder (I know some do not allow birds on their shoulders, but I do, and always have done as long as the bird behaves itself). Or maybe spend a couple of mins with him and just talk and sing etc, then put him back in his cage. Then when you come home (doesn't have to be immediately you come home) let him out again, and maybe have him eat his dinner at the same time as you with him on his tstand. Then later, have time together again, while watching tv. I let Skye out every morning and she eats on her tstand while we have breakfast. Then during the day, I take her out with us if we are going somewhere (she is in her travel cage or harness). Yesterday she was in her harness while I was watering the yard. Then at dinner time she is on her tstand eating her dinner while we eat (if I forget her, she sits and stares at me and says "what" - then I get her and give her her dinner on her tstand. LOL). she eats spagetti, brown rice, mashed potatoe and pizza (anything we eat). She also gets plenty of fresh fruit and veges and a bean mix I cook and sprouts that I make up. Plus crackers, cereal, popcorn, corn, sweetpeas, sweetpotatoe etc etc. I have my vege garden going again and she gets chillies, capsicum, silverbeet out of it, and soon will be getting tomatoes, paw paw, mango's, pumpkin and bananas as well as anything else I plant. The main thing to remember is as long as the bird knows when you are home he will get to spend some quality time with you, then it should be ok. Our birds love to be with the rest of their "flock" and that "flock" is now us. Oh also, remember to have a big enough cage for the bird to flap around and play in. Put plenty of chewable toys in (although I find Skye is not a bad chewer, like the cockatoo's). Change toys around so he does not get bored during the day. Remember ekkies need fresh fruit and veges everyday. Skye gets seeds a couple of times a week as a treat and I have never given her pelletts in the 12 months I have owned her.
You will be fine with your new ekkie, they are really not that hard to look after, the main difference I can see is they are not naturally great seed eaters, because they come the rainforests of Australia, Papua New Guinea and the Solomon Islands and do normally eat fruit and berries in the wild.
Good luck with your new "fid" |
