Hi!
I just joined the forum, hello everyone!
I`d like to know more about the personality differences of subspecies. Especially bethween solomon island and red sided. Is there any? For example, does the other one have more tendensy on plucking feathers? What about stress tolerance? Links are useful too!
Hopefully someone answers |

Hi Johanna! Welcome to this forum..
Perhaps ekkiemom can tell you a little more about eclectus? She is quite knowledgable about them!
Do you have any birds already? |

I have two lovebirds (Agapornis roseicollis).
At the very moment they are exploring pellets, but not so pleased about it...
I have been thinking about maby getting eclectus parrot for some time now. But its not current right now, first i need to save alot of money..
And ofcourse, try to get as much info about the bird as possible.
And waiting is okay i guess. Ewerytime when there comes some unexpected situation in my life, bigger or smaller, i can think again, how it would be wise to act if i had a bird right now.
Well, at least trying to think positive
-every night dreaming about parrots ( going gracy?)

Oh wow, two lovebirds.. What are their names?
What pellets are you trying to feed them? Just curious?
And, you're not going crazy.. It's called birdy flu, and we all have it here I guess! |

The other one I have called Kiukku, it means something like a bit angry, or the adjective "kiukkuinen" you can use of someone who is not in a good mood. She is more loud than the other one, and always "complaining" about everything
The other one doesn`t have a name yet. Problem is that their from the same family, and look just alike! Only way to know who is who is when Kiukku opens her beak to let me know what she thinks! And i dont know their sexes neither. So far they havent been trying to breed. In the future i have to test their DNA.
The pellets are Zupreem for small birds. Yesterday the other one ate a piece of chili (must been a mistake, they dont never eat anything thats red) and it was standing beak open for a long time |

That's a cute name.. Kiukku.. Thanks for explaining the meaning of that name to us.
What kind of pellets are Zupreem? Are they colored?
Please read this about pellets:

It's about various pellets..
Were they bothered by the taste of the pepper? Over here, they can handle it quite easily! |

Thanks for the link!
ZuPreem pellets aren`t colored, they do contain some kind of sugar however, according to the link you sent.
I think tey have never tasted hot pepper before, so i think she was pretty suprised about the effection. ...First i got pretty scared, before realizing what it was |

Hi Johanna,
I'm surprised your lovebird reacted the way he did after eating the chili. Parrots have only 1/10th of the number of taste buds that we have, so most of them love eating chili peppers because it doesn't taste as hot to them as it does to us! |

Sue I have the coloured Zupreem ("fruit blend"). They sold me a huge bag of it when I got my Grey, as if it was an essential part of his diet Now I'm so mad about it! It's just sitting there gathering dust! I only fed it to my bird like once, when I brought him home, but then as I did more research I realized how bad it is
I've been feeding my Hagen pellets that I don't feed Bunny anymore to the wild pigeons, I hope the protein content isn't too high for them, but a lot of the time they have nothing to eat but garbage so I didn't seen the harm in it, besides I mix it in with my lovebird's old seed mix |

Shirin, I can understand you're mad. I'd be too, but most stores don't know about parrots, even though their specialization is parrots..
I think the pigeons won't be harmed by the pellets, don't worry too much. The pigeons in Amsterdam eat so many BAD stuff! Fries, and so much other unhealthy stuff! (And I hear they eat garbage with you too!) |

Hello I own a Red Sided eclectus. She is 16 months old and I have had her since she was 4 months old. She is slightly larger than my RB2 (now deceased) and talks like you would not believe. I had read that the RS are the slightly better pet, but I really do not know. I am on an eclectus forum and most of them seem to think their birds are just great. Some are feather pluckers some are not (mine is not). They really need to eat a proper diet of mostly fresh fruit and veges every day. I do not give my birds any pelletts at all. Aparently ekkies are prone to problems from manufactued food that can cause feather plucking and toe tapping and wing flipping. These quite often are diet related whether it be from pellets or not enough calcium or other vitamins. My ekkie only gets seed now a couple of times a week as a treat, and never had any pellets. |

are the ekkies loud? I always wondered if they make a lot of noise like the toos or if they are more reserved |

Skye can get a very loud screech when she becomes excited. Especially is the house becomes loud and she feels the need to join in the racket. I just wheel her cage outside onto the verandah or into the lounge room to watch a bit of tv - basically give her a change of scenery - that usually shuts her up. |

I have a 9 wk old eclectus female. The problem I am having is her wings are clipped but she flys off your hand or her cage or tree. I pick her up and tell her no but she just keeps doing it. Is it because of her age. I have had her for 2 wks now but nothing has changed. When you hold her she looks around you to see where she can fly to. It makes it hard for me to train her because she will not stay on my hand. She will step up when you tell her to. |
