What kind of pellet do you feed your eclectus?  Reply with quote

I member of the Dutch forum was wondering what kind of pellet you feed your eclectus?
Her ekkie is on Roudybush at the moment, but the quality of the feathers doesn't seem to improve. On the contrary: Black edges are appearing on the feathers.
She's also feeding a wide variety of fruit & veggies.

At first mine got Nutribird, but they did not like that too much and stopped eating that. Since I thing seedmix is better than pellets I did not mind. So they got seedmix, fruit, veggies, nuts and some other things. But since about a half year ago I decided to buy Ecobird (as far as I know a Dutch brand) and they get it 1 or 2 times a week and they still like to eat it very well.

I've been told by eclectus owners that you shouldn't feed them pellets and sunflower seeds aren't real good either. I don't know what the pellets can hurt but I don't tempt fate. I feed mine mainly raw nuts. all kinds...whole foods or places like that have a big variety of plain unsalted raw nuts and mine love them. I mostly feed fruits and veggies but when I give seeds thats what I feel safest giving her.

Sunflower seeds do contain fat and other nutricious vitamins, so there is no problem in giving it. ONLY because they contain quite a lot of fat you should not give your ekkie to many of them.

Pellets are always controversial, BUT there are enough good pellets that you can feed your eclectus. There are reason why some people tell you not to give them to an eclectus;
- many pellets contain additives, these additives are often the cause of problems. One of the most common problems is toe-tapping because of pellets.
- pellets do not stimulate the parrots stomach and because of that the stomach becomes "lazy" and that can cause health problems.

BUT one important reason to give your eclectus pellets is because than he gets all his vitamins. When feeding seedmix, nuts etc. your eclectus can choose to eat what he likes best and that again results in selective eating and not getting all vitamins he needs.

I agree that I also feel best in feeding my ekkies fruit, veggies, seedmix and other things, that include pellets. But the pellets are an extra for them.
