a nasty wing clip (damn pet shops!!)  Reply with quote

Yet another bad petstore story.... My housemate's boyfriend bought a cockatiel from a pet shop 2 days ago. The store took it into a back room to clip its wings for them and when they came out with it the wings were absolutely hacked and she was even starting to bleed. They must have used very blunt scissors and not taken any care at all. They took her home because they didn't want to leave her at this store in that state. Crying or Very sad I just hope she doesn't start pulling out her feathers if they are irritating her. Is there anything we could do now? or just wait till she molts? He is keeping her at our place for a while so I will keep a close eye on her and let you know how 'Peanut" is getting on.

the vet could probably pull some of the really nasty feathers so they grow back quicker and trim up the ones that are still ok, I prefer to clip the first 1/2 dozen or so feathers at the first barbs AFTER they no longer have a blood supply, I just find they fold up better inside the other feathers, It looks better and doesn't irritate the bird as much. I would be concerned about the affect it has on flight, too little and the bird can still fly well, too much and it could injure itself on landing.

Well I'm sure glad they ended up taking Peanut even after the hacked up wing job! Like Shell says, maybe they could take it into an avian vet to have it trimmed up a little. Boy, if I ever buy a bird from a shop I'm going to tell them NOT to clip it's wings. Course, I took Manu into my avian vets assistant once while the avian vet was on vacation, & I was SO mad becuz he did such a bad job!! I nearly cried!

I have to say that I have come across a lot of 'breeders' here in perth that has absolutely no idea how to trim wing feathers! Most of them kinda just clip one side with a few front primaries left intact. Which is silly really as the bird can still fly!!

To be honest, I think a lot of people here that classify themselves as 'breeders' even they don't actually breed! They just kinda go out and get themselves a pair or two of breeding pair, and off they go, and when it's time for the little ones to go, they just do what they think is correct, which most of the time isn't!! I think Apollo came from someone like that as you might know his left wing is completely butchered!! I'll see if I can find a pic of it to show you what it was like... and still is like plus a few more feathers now though....

OK, Click here to see a pic of Apollo's butchered left wing...
It is so sad how some people can get away with it!! It's worse when it comes to vet who doesn't know what s/he is doing!!

Sorry but this has to be for canadians unless they run a company anywhere out of canada which I doubt it. For a good wing, nail and beak job call parrotscanada.com. They came last night and did regan, they also do DNA for 28.50(for DNA only) but altogether it cost me 58.50 bucks

Peanut is settling in  Reply with quote

Poor Peanuts wings look even worse then Apollo's Crying or Very sad It looks like they have cut even higher then where the flight feathers end. I feel so sorry for her since it is also both her wings. She seems to be doing ok though, I will keep a close eye on her. I have never bought a pet from shops myself but this was his first bird and he was a bit unaware of just what (some) of these people can be like. I will get her checked by the vet this week.

Oh Fi, that poor Peanut. I am just glad that you are taking care of him for your friend. I'm very confident that you'll look after him well. It is so sad that people would do that to poor birds. I really can't imagine what Peanut's wing is like at the moment if you say it's worse than Apollo's. That just makes me mad to even think about it!! Stupid petshop people who don't know what they are doing!!

Cathy and Shirin

Unfortunately this is like the norm around here as birds aren't valued too much by people since they are just so common here. It's so sad and it frustrate the living daylight out of me when I read in the local newspaper classified how many parrots babies are being sold by 'amateurs'... (I wouldn't even call them that really) I just wanna go out there and get all their birds off their hand!! So sad really. Sad
