Yah, I am probably going to keep the same name. He responds to that. We just brought him home a half hour ago. He is still in his carrier. waiting for my husband to come home to assemble his more than huge cage. He looks a bit scared from my kids. I have his carrier on top of my fridge, so the kids don't reach out for him. He is fluffing his head feathers quit a bit, is that what you call molting. Is he upset? He is not grabbing onto the bars of the carrier, he is just sitting on it's floor. I gave him some crackers and he's eating them, but he is still fluffing up his feathers. What does that mean?

YAAAAY!! He's home!!! I'm sure he's fine. Once you get him out of the carrier and settled in he'll be fine. Molting is when he sheds his feathers and gets new ones. If feathers start coming out, check the base of the feather, if there is blood on the tip he could be plucking and you'll need to find the source of his stress.

He's just nervous right now and fluffing up. Keep us posted on any worries and concerns and of couse all the neat things in between.

Hey, riffmax painted a portrait of Chaquita today! You'll have to check it out by clicking on my diary button and looking in the "Chaquita's portrait by Riffmax". It's beautiful!!!

ok, chaquita's mom, I will check out the new pic. Today was a crazy day. Talylor stayed in the carrier for seven hours. My husband had to go to home depot and get all the equipment he need to assemble the cage and make it kid safe. He filled out the big spaces with plastic meshy sheets, so the kids won't be able to put their hands through the cage and get bitten. We left the top half open without protection, but it doesn't matter, my kids can't reach up that high even through the bars are pretty spacy. Oh my god, the cage looked extremely big in my living room. It took almost a quarter of the room. That is a big cage. I didn't look that big on the farm. I guess maybee cause she had him outside. Wow! it's just amazing on how big this cage is. It is supposed to be a breeding cage for macaws. I don't know if I should purchase another one for indoors and leave that one for outdoor. You guys should have seen how big this cage is. I will send pics when I get a chance to. Anyway , once we let Taylor into his cage, he was so happy. Flapping his wings and dancing for us, but as soon as someone will approach the cage, he will attack. The funny and sad thing at the same time, He kinda bit my husband as he was getting him out of the carrier and into the cage. He said it hurts, but he believes that the parrot was not trying to bite him, but instead, he is trying to hold on to his finger to get out of the carrier. I don't know, but I think my husband wants to believe that, because he thinks he's the parrot's favorate so far.

Hey tina

Congrats on the bird being home!! How is he going at the moment? Is he loud? How is he fitting in with everyone.

How big is the cage at the moment measurements wise? I am curious. I would imagine it's huge since it's a breeding cage. the way i see is that the bigger the cage, the better it is for the bird in it if it has to stay in there for an extensive period of time. I'd love to see a pic of the cage, with Taylor in it of course!! Smile

Take Care

Hi Tina, more than likely he bit out of fear. I wouldn't worry much about the attacking the cage thing. I'm sure he's scared to death about his new surroundings. Just give him some time, stand next to his cage and talk to him in a soft voice. It will, in most cases, take about 2 weeks for him to adjust.

About the size of the cage, if it's overwhelmingly large, then when you are able to start taking him out of the cage and handling him, maybe then you can get a smaller one since he'll be able to come out more.

have fun and don't get discouraged. Remember, don't try to interact with him if you are angry or frustrated, they can sense this and use it in a negative way.

okay, sorry it took me a while to answer to you guys. Talylor is changing for sure. He is more calmer, and doesn't attack us as much. He actually loves my six year old son and he lets him scratch his tummy and under his wings Razz This is just amazing! I am beginning to love this bird. I keep feeding him with my hand, he likes it that way more. Whenever I am cooking something or feeding the kids something, I right away go to his cage and give a piece too. I don't know guys, but I think Taylor is finding his new home to be better than the old one. All these kids and adults around him, giving him all the attention he strives for. WOW! Very impressive. I hope he keeps up this good behavior. He dances for me whenever I put music on, and if I say Hi ti him, he shakes his head as if he's saying hi. It is really nice you guys. Although so many nice things happening, one thing is upsetting me. Everytime I give him something to eat, he grinds it with his beak until it becomes a tiny peace and than he throws it away. Why? Do parrots play with their food? It seems like out of the food I feed him, only five percent make it to his stomack. I know he's not home sick or that he's protesting his new home, I just think he's a picky eater. I also went to the pet store and purchased Zupreeme for big parrots, and he also grinds it and spill the remainding on the floor. I don't know if he's getting any in? He like to eat human food, and hates parrots food. His ex-owner told me that she feeds him all kinds of junk food like Mcdonalds and hot dogs, no wonder he doesn't like my food or his healthy Zupreme. What should I do? He also likes to eat from people's hands through the cage bars, and he doesn't eat from his dishes(no matter what's in it). I am going to face a problem with his feeding. Oh gosh, I hope not. I can't stand by that cage all day long to feed him, especially with him grinding the food to pieces. What do you think I should do? Anyway, I will be sending some pics with his cage inside my house, it is such a huge cage, it looks funny indoors. Very Happy thanks for you all who care about my situation, I really appreciate it. Wink

Hi Tina!! Sounds like Taylors settling in very nicely with his new flock! You definately have something to work with. Very Happy The grinding of the food thing, that's how they eat. AND it can be very messy. I'm fortunate, I'll be lucky to find 1 piece of food on the floor daily Very Happy Bird's waste most of their food. You might have a habit to break when it comes to people food though. Also, since you are changing his food, make sure you do it over time. Could take weeks, could take months. By changing from one food right to a new food could make them sick or end up with an empty stomache which also isn't healthy. Introduce his new food mixed with his old food.

When you feed him through the bars, feed him stuff other than people food. Give him a piece of HIS food or something healthy like fruits or veggies. There is A LOT of people food that is unhealthy for birds. Do some research on acceptable foods for macaws. Try to avoid feeding him through the bars too often, perhaps wean him off it to just a couple times a day. Offer some of the food he does like and put a piece in his dish instead of through the bars. He'll learn that the good stuff comes out of his dish and not through the bars, even if you have to start out with people food that he likes. Changing a birds ways is a big weaning process, gradually changing their "bad" behavior to good behavior.

Hi Tina,

Obviously some human food like steam veggies are definitely fine for bird to eat. Birds do like to grind their food, and sometimes that's just how they eat. you might realise it, they are getting food into their stomach. One good way to find out if he's getting anything into his crop is to check out his poop. Is it really watery or is it really ummm 'lumpy and full'!! LOL.... If he's eating, it'll be full of green stuff with urine (the watery bit). Have a look at those...

Does Taylor let you cuddle him? Would he let you feel his crop? That's another way to see if it's got food in him or not. Just a thought only though. The poop would be the best way to check.

I difinatly didn't get him out of the cage yet to feel his crop, as far as his poop goes, it's exactly as you described it ( green with some whitish and a little water). I am guessing , there is some food that's going into him. Well, his parrot food is untouched, that's for sure. Oh, how I wish he would eat those and save me time from feeding him through the cage bars.
