I'm not 100% sure, but I believe it happens when you're birds are in the same room as you all the time....the dust builds up in your lungs? I could be wrong...but it sounds right...

Why??? Confused You don't have it do you?!

Bird keepers lung is a respiratory condition caused by daily and long term exposure to bird dust and dried bird poop in the air. It's usually seen in people who have A LOT of birds in their house, like over 30, or in pigeon fanciers.

NO!!!!! I DO NOT have bird keepers lung, but I am getting a baby conure on the weekend and I noticed that after I came home from the breeder I had headaches
and a very stuffy nose. So I was kinda worried. But 2 birds in one house won't cause
bird keepers lung, right??

No, you won't get it from 2 birds, but you could have or develop an allergy to the birds. My sister gets a really bad runny nose around my birds also. I would find that out before you actually bring the bird home, so you won't have to give it up later.

Well i volunteer at my local pet store whitch always has a LOT of birds.
I am now guessing that the reason I got stuffy at the breeders was because
there were several cages of budgies a finches in the same room as the conure.
It was probably because all the birs where in the same room, cause I don't
get stuffy at the pet store. When I get the conure, he and Cookie will not be kept in the same room.

yeah birds keeper's lung does apply to people that have lots of birds in the house, like me, but I don't have that many really.. but something to consider also is that you can get the condition if your cage aren't kept clean on a regular basis.

I doubt that the baby conure will make you sick. I believe it is mostly African Grays and Cockatoos that make dust which makes people sneeze.

I'm not suggesting that you not clean cages, etc., but... I read an article by some people who discovered that it was the bird FOOD that was causing "bird allergies" in people. Once the food was changed, the people were fine. The birds were healthier, too.

Another possibility is that you reacted to a chemical at the breeder's. Many shop keepers still use household chemicals or wear fragrances that make some people sick. Pity the poor birds... Also, the use of an ionizer where volitile organic compounds (found in cleansers and fragrances) are used creates formaldehyde, which could cause headaches and a stuffy nose. Another possibility is the air conditioning, if there was any mold in the air conditioner or its vents. The list goes on, but you get the idea...

Enjoy your new birdie!

He is a maroon tailed conure. He looks like a cross between a green-cheek and a black-capped! Smile

this is actually really common on chicken/turkey farms (Perdue, Butterball) who mass produce the birds unfortunately. The keepers must feed the birds somehow and with over 10,000 turkeys in one unventilated room, a small mask isn't going to help for very long, im sure your not in any danger having a few birds :]
