Advice Please  Reply with quote

Hello, my yellow nape was really sick about four months ago, he was sneezing, coughing, wasn't eating, had sticky eyes and was very congested and had lost a lot of weight. I had given him an antibiotic and some tlc and he seemd to improve significantly. However, he is far from 100%. He doesn't have the symptoms he had a few months ago but he seems very weak. He seems to lose his balance a lot and does not move around very much. I know he should see a vet but he has never been outside my house since I got him 20 years ago and it is winter now. He is between 20 and 22 years old. Could it be old age or does it sound like something treatable.

Please help.

I just want to add that Paco has been outside my house, He is brought outside in the summer. I meant to say that he has never been to a vet and is not docile so he wouldn't react very well to being handle.

I'm very sorry to hear Pacos ill. I can understand your dilemma, as I have a 12 yr old 'tiel who's never been to a vet either & at this point in his life am concerned that taking him to one could do almost more damage than good, as far as stress.

You know, I'm sorry I can't be of more help, I don't know anything about the 'zons & their life spans & I've never had a bird long enough that it just went down due to old age.

I guess what I would suggest is that you call an avian vet. Tho they will probably just tell you to bring it in, but tell them you're concerned about Pacos age & the stress factor. They should be able to tell you if they thing they can at least help him or not, I would hope.

Good luck, I wish you both the best!

I'm very sorry to hear this.. Sad

I would think that amazons wouldn't be 'old' at the age of twenty, my guess is that he's suffering from something? (Something that can probably be treated)

I'd say the same as Cathy.. Call an avian vet asap.. Perhaps they can come over or give you tips how to transport him without much stress?

Good luck and please keep us updated..

Hello!

I looked on the web for Yellow nape amazon life span and it is supposed to be 25 years and more (the source: http://www.jackspets.com/Birdparrot.htm ), but then I looked at some more pages to be sure and most amazon parrots are expected to live 30 - 70 years ( one of the sources: http://www.webindia123.com/pet.....parrot.htm ), so I do not now what is true.

Maybe Paco needs some more time to get well due to his age. There is a possibility that he had suffered some permanent injuries that the illness has left. Bacteria can leave qute the damage in our or anyones body and it takes time to heal.

It would be best to call an avian vet, tell him when did you noticed Paco got ill, how long and how much antibiotics did he get, the progress of healing and current situation.

I hope there's nothing wrong and he just needs some more time to heal, gain some weight, get his spirits up and get more strength in his muscles.

I wish you both good luck and some good news from the vet.

Hi there. I'm so sorry to hear about your Amazon. Sad With all the symptoms you've described, he sounds like he's a sick bird. I think you should take him to an avian vet ASAP. Even if your bird isn't tame, the vet will still know how to handle him. He will towel him, and examine him that way. Your amazon won't be that traumatized, believe me, he might not like it, but he'll get over it in matter of a couple of days. Just think about all the wild birds that are caught for conservation purposes, they're checked by a vet, and banded, and they end up just fine. And these are wild birds that percieve humans as predators. Since you've had your parrot for over 20 years, I'm pretty sure he's used to humans by now. Not taking him to the vet could be gambling with his life.. so please, just take him in. Confused

Amazons live for a long time. They can live for 80 years with record of some even living to 100. So it is probably not old age. I would say see a vet asap.

Amazon Parrots can live a very long time. Some out live their owners. I would have to say, if I were in your shoes I would take him to the vet. I had a Cockatiel that I lost from the storm who really hated the vet, and would get very upset at me for bringing him. I would rather have that little stress bringing him, then to not bring him. Birds can hide signs of illness very good. You can't tell by looking at him, he may need blood test, fecal test, different types of test to really know what he has.

Here is my best on transferring him to the vet.

Get his traveling cage ready. Put a soft towel or cloth at the bottom of his cage. Place a favorite toy and some treats that he just loves to munch on.

If it is Cold outside, urn your car on and turn the heat on. Crack a window to let fresh air also get in the car. Not too much, just enough so that you know fresh air is getting in there.

If you have scented things in your car, I would throw all of them away 2 days before the trip to the vet. Air the car out completely before placing your fid in there.

After all this, your fid would be a little bit better. Also, play some soft music in the car, and keep em in the front set with you, where he can see you.

Hope all goes well, and your baby will be home sooner then we all think.
God Bless,
Lisa

I agree with everyone's advice Smile I have a YNA and she is 26 years old. Amazon's do live up to 80+ years if taken care of properly. Please, don't gamble with Paco's life. He sounds like a very sick bird and can be treated with proper vet care. Not just any vet, make sure it's an avian vet. Regular vets just don't have the knowledge to properly care for a bird.

Lisa's advice on the traveling thing is right on. Even if you use a regular pet carrier. Just make sure you cover it in the outdoors. When a person towels a bird it really calms them down and minimizes the stress. He'll be fine as far as that goes. But I fear he won't be fine unless treated by a vet. Good luck and please let us know how things go.

Please take your bird to the vet. A sick bird needs professional medical attention. He should be able to recover and have a full life if properly treated.
Let us know what happens.

Even though he may not like being handled, it is much better to take him to get the care he needs than to let him be ill. He will be better for it. Like someone else said, the vet can show you how to handle him without stressing him out too much or hurting him.

Good Luck!
