Hey Cathy,
It's cool that Manu isn't afraid of his harness. I must say I haven't met too many birds that aren't fearful of them to start off with to some degree!! Good stuff. It does definitely help alot if the bird can see it before you put it on it. I can't wait to see some pics of Manu with his harness on!
Hey Sue,
I was very surprise as well with how long Apollo got used to it, but still not completely though. Pending on mood, he'll try to destroy the harness on him.
Oh I forgot to mentioned in my other post. Treats was the key to it all! In the second pic I posted, you can see Apollo holding and eating the almond that I used as praise!! Blackmail do work with these guy!! Ha ha ha.
Speaking of my other post... I meant to say 'They' not 'You do give out pretty nasty bites or what!!' I read it again, and man was I embarassed. He he he. Forgive me. |

At the moment, I am surfing on some harnass as well as flight suit sites.
I never tried a flight suit, but I am willing to give it a try. Though I think the poop container is a bit overdone. (Sorry) I just don't mind them pooping..
Hmmm perhaps I should use some more blackmail with my next attempt. I really want to try something as I really think a harnass or flight suit is safer when biking. With anything, but especially biking! |

Don't you think those flight suit looks so funny?!?!? I think some people just go over board with that, then again, some people find it very useful. I guess it's just my opinion. he he he.
I agree with you, having a harness or some sort of restrain other then your hand would be safer for Zazu. I guess you just have to stock up on those treats.
Just a thought. Are there anything that Zazu likes doing or places that he loves going that he doesn't get to do or go too often? May be if you can think of something, when you get the harness, put that on him once you can with lots of treats, and then let him do whatever and take him there. May be that might help him associate fun with the harness. Just a thought. |

I think they look very funny indeed.. I saw some photos of people having it on their birds without the leash. They're just putting it on their fids so that their floor & furniture doesn't get soiled, or that's how it seems..
I find that disturbing.. Just my opinion..
I think it's ok to have birds wearing these just for safety.. In case they don't accept a harnass..
I think Zazu loves to go to the McDonalds, where he can eat chicken wings or tear up french fries.. He he he but I don't think it's a good idea to race to the Mc and stuff him every time I put the harnass on, don't you think? LOL!
He also loves shopping.. But it's quite far from here to the precinct..
Perhaps I can put the harnass on when we're in the car? |

Here's one of the photos I took of Manu yesterday
When I got Manu in the winter of 2003, the lady told me he was harness trained. However, she didn't give me his & I never got him another one until the next summer, which he only used for about 2 weeks before he broke it, & then I never got another one until this week, so it's been a long while since he's worn one. I got an extra one this time, as a back up!
Like I said, I really didn't have any problem getting it on him & he does nip at the clasps while it's on, but I'm working on slowly getting him more comfortable with having it on |

hi Sue,
Linus' harness is orange. From the picture of Manu it looks like the same type of harness that Manu is wearing.
Linus views the toy parrots as chew toys. He is not afraid of them, he just thinks they all need chewing to many small pieces.
good luck. |

Oh wow! He sits there as such a good boy! Lovely!
You really cannot tell he nips at the clasps.. You'd say he is perfectly comfy! |

LOL! Linus thinks the same of toy parrots as Zazu: They need to be chewed down.
I have tried a similar harnass as Manu is wearing when Zazu was younger. It was too big then. I tried the smaller one, but that one had a different look. It works quite differently!

Hi Sue,
LOL, yes I probably wouldn't rush out there to McD everytime I put the harness on him. I can just imagine a little fattie King Zazu waddling around the place!! LOL. Wouldn't be too good for him ay? |

Hey everyone!
That photo of Manu was taken the first time I had put the new harness on him, so it fit him rather loosely. I didn't want to try to adjust it when he was wearing it, so it does look rather large on him in the photo.
And you know, that's just it, when he is wearing it, he's almost too still & quiet, as if he's afraid to move. I want him to eventually feel more comfy about having it on, make it almost second nature, perhaps like we feel about wearing clothes; we're more comfortable without them, but certainly livable with them on!
You know Manu is such a skittish bird, in my opinion, he seems to startle very easily. I hope to eventually start taking him for walks in public. We have a park just down the street from us, which I'd love to take him to, on his leash someday, but I just can't imagine doing so right now! I can just see him panicking & starting in on his call of the wild thing, flapping his wings, or trying to get loose & maybe even hurting himself! YIKES!! Maybe someday ... but maybe not, we'll see |

Hi Cathy..
Please note that birds can pick up your mood very easily, so if you don't feel sure about going somewhere with him, please don't do so. Or keep it very simple..
When you are gaining selfconfidence, you can start to go to places..
Just start in the garden, or perhaps on the drive way..
You'll see, you'll be comfy with it too, and it'll reflect on Manu.. |

Yeah, I'm planning on just starting in my yard. These last couple of days actually I've just been sitting on the back porch with him. When I think he's comfortable with that, I'll sit on the front porch with him, where there's more street traffic & goings on. Then I'll start walking around the yard with him a little & maybe even just a little way down the alley in back, past peoples back yards.
You're right, I really DON'T feel real confident about it, & you know, I may NEVER get to the point where I feel comfy about taking him for walks around the neighborhood, or the park, which is OK with me too. It would be OK with me if we just hang out in our back yard even.
You know, he's even very nervous when I walk with him by our gurgling pond in the back yard. I get close to it & he starts trying to get up my arm to my shoulder
I'm just going to take it slow |

Hi Cathy,
please don't feel bad about it.. There will come a day when you'll feel more comfortable, and then you can take the plunge.
Right now is not the time..
Can you hold a toy in your hand, as you pass 'scary things' to distract him? Just pay attention to the toy, and not to him.
I think he'll start paying attention to the toy as well, instead of the scary things.. (Like the gurgling pond)
Then, praise him..
Please let me know if this works.
(It's very important that you don't pay attention to him, not even look at him.. -well, from the corners of your eyes.. - )
Good luck! |

Thanks so much for the wish of luck, & for the advise, I will try the passing a toy suggestion.
You know, he is very afraid, or uncomfortable with things he's not familiar with. He's very relaxed & comfy in any room in our house. And he's gotten very comfy about being out in his outdoor cage, EXCEPT when there's something out of the ordinary such as someone walking up the alley. He's even getting less nervous about our next door neighbors being in their yard.
Do you think that's just normal? I mean, I've tried to get him used to changes, but maybe not enough. Course, we are pretty much stay at home type of people, & I really don't know what else I COULD do.
He really doesn't have a problem with new people coming into the house, he gets very curious about them, but not afraid.
Do you think maybe I worry too much??!!
Ugh! Sometimes I do seem to drive myself just nuts about what I should be doing different |
