Cathy, are you nervous yourself when you're going outside with him?
If so, please try to calm down before you go out with him.. Try to manage breathing etc..
Would it help to explain Manu that those are your neighbors? Perhaps take Manu towards your neighbors (I seriously don't know how far they live from you!)
Please instruct your neighbors first, they should not look at Manu directly as he can become very nervous! Do you think they are willing to cooporate?
I think, but I am not an expert, that it would be best if your neighbors would continue what they are doing, and that you show Manu what they're doing..
Are you comforting him when he's scared?
If so, please don't try to do that (I know it sounds harsh!) but instead distract him with a toy he loves (Or anything else he likes) then reward him for good behavior.. |

Oh yes, my neighbors are really good with him. They like him a lot & Manu has gotten pretty used to them, he still is startled at first when he sees them, but then he goes about with his business as normal, as if they're not there.
Am I nervous about taking him out? Oh, not really, actually I look forward to it, but I guess I just feel concerned about things startling him so much.
Case in point: Just this afternoon we were in the backyard, he in his cage. The neighbor on the OTHER side of me suddenly appeared in her backyard & before I even noticed her, Manu was doing his uncontrollable call!!
You're right, I did immediately jump up & tried to calm him, tho nothing would work until she was out of site! She's not outside as often as my other neighbors so he has not had much chance to get used to her being there.
You know, I am going to introduce her to Manu, face to face, & just ask her to excuse his behavior when he sees her & explain that it may take awhile for him to feel secure about her presence.
Other than his freaking out when someone unfamiliar walks by, everything is good. |

Whoops, macawcalls can be sooo loud! Weren't your ears 'damaged'? LOL!
Is it an idea to always bring a toy, to distract Manu instead of calming him down? (And thus rewarding him)
Please ask your neighbor not to look at Manu, that's quite important. Manu could feel treatened.. Just ask her to ignore him, and talk & look at you instead of looking to Manu.. |

Hi! You're always so nice with your insite!
Yes, I will take a toy out to use to distract him whe he gets "the way he gets"!
Oh, his call of the wild is ear splitting & always scares me when he starts, I can imagine how scared a neighbor, or stranger walking up the alley must feel, LOL !! Boy, anyone trying to steel him would sure have a hard time!
But my neighbor is a very nice lady & I'm sure that if I talk to her, she'll be just fine about him. Actually, I am very lucky to have all very nice neighbors whom I'm quite friendly with & they all love animals.
I very much appreciate all your suggestions & advise

Hi Cathy,
you're so welcome.. I just hope it'll work, that would be great, wouldn't it?
Please let me know if it works, just curious.
LOL! I don't think anyone will steal Manu.. If they'd even try, he'd pierce their ears with his calls.. I know, Donny & Cherry are so very loud. If I would be a burglar I would NEVER steal a bird, TOO LOUD!
You are so lucky with your neighbors. I had neighbors that were complaining all the time. They didn't even live next to me, but on the other side..
The other neighbors weren't complaining at all!
I'm curious if it'll work, just keep us updated.. |

Hi
I was just wondering if there are harnesses available for small parrots like cockatiels? I would like to get something like that for Papug and take him outside with me but I'm worried that it may be to heavy for him and make him uncomfortable... Anyone used it for such a small birdy? |

Hi Papug,
Try the web-site bird-diaper.com. Their flight suits are available for all size birds from budgies to geese.
I have never tries the bird diaper myself. I use the feather theather harness on my Eclectus. I do not know how small they are available.

Yes, I've heard too that flight suits are good for budgies & tiels, as well as large birds. I don't know if that's the same thing as the diaper thing. I really want to try one for my macaw, but I've just spent the money for 2 harnesses for him. Maybe next year I'll get him a flight suit. |

Those flight suits or the diapers look so funny on birds!! IT's hilarious to see them on the birds!! LOL. he he he.
They do have harnesses for smaller bird. As far as I know they are pretty light weight. have a look around, i'm sure you'll find something that will fit papug just beautifully. Good luck
Cheers

Thanks
I guess I will look around for a small harness and give it a try. If he is comfortable I will use it, and if not then I'll get rid of it and just keep Papug inside the house... I don't think I need to use that diper thing for Papug. He is potty trained now and poops around only when I forget to take him to his "toilet" on time |

I thought this topic provided some good info, so I moved it to this forum. There will be a 'shadow' topic on the

forum though! |
