appetite swings?  Reply with quote

hey guys, I'm just wondering if anyone has experienced appetite swings with their birds? I'm a little worried about Pepe; yesterday he went through nearly all his food, and then today he barely touched it Sad. He was still his normal crazy hyperactive self, but just didn't seem to feel like eating. I guess I'll wait and see what happens tomorrow before I worry too much, but I'm just wondering if anyone else has experienced this sort of thing.. Could molting have something to do with it? He's been losing quite a few feathers lately so I'm guessing he's going through his first molt.

Hi Ioanna.

Well I do hope that Pepe goes back to eating soon!

From my experience with Apollo, when he first started molting, he stopped eating!! well didn't eat as much anyway, and he lost something like 70grams!! But he started eating a lot again once his molt sets in...

Let us know how he goes tomorrow.

Wow, he lost 70 grams? That's like more than half of Pepe's weight Wink. That's a little encouraging to know that Apollo wasn't eating when he was molting either. By the way, how long does it take for apollo to go through a molt? Pepe has been loosing little feathers here and there for at least the last month, though the last couple of weeks it's been more obvious.

hmm from the very first feather that fell?? hmmm well umm so far may be three to four months? Still loosing feathers!!! LOL... he's a big one with lots of feathers to loose I guess!! LOL

and yes he did loose a lot of weight, which had me really really worried, but vet visit said nothing wrong. but he started eating again.. and now he weighs in at around 605g. Compared to mum's RuYi, 126g. Smile

Do you know heavy Pepe is right now? might be a good idea to weight him now, and when he loose I think 10% of his original weight very quickly then it's definitely something to worry about! Just keep an eye on him. They do loose their apetite when they start to molt...

But in saying that... Sometime I think Apollo just have an off day when he just doesn't eat much, and he'll make up for it the next day!! Smile

Hi is Pepe having normal Poops? If he is acting normal and having normal poops probably not to worry but if he is not pooping perhaps their is somekind of stomach blockage?

he's eating well today, yay Very Happy. He's been cheerful and chattering all day. There's always the chance that he just didn't like that we had people over at our house for most of the day yesterday Confused.

Hi koukouvagia..

My birds, except for Iago (whos appetite is ehm let's say huge) have this from time to time. I'll give them the same amount of food, and they almost don't touch it..
If Pepe won't be eating much tomorrow, I'd be a bit worried..

Please keep us posted..

Yikes, stupid me, forgot to read your last post!

Glad to hear he's eating well today! Smile

It could be that he was too interested in those people so he forgot to eat. Could that be it?
Zazu lost quite some weight when we were on holiday. The vet said it was normal.. Perhaps comparable?
