bird insects??????  Reply with quote

Good AM/PM

i just went to my vet to check on the birds i have (two indian ringneck and one cockatoo) as i saw the male ringneck's feathers are not growing on his chest and legs like the rest of them,, he told me its a insects and he gave me a spray called dander down i search on the internet it says this is for stopping feature dust only,, here in this country vets are very few and no avian vets,,,, the rest are fine no problems with them, hes also not gaining weight like the other ringneck, altough he eats and drinks fair enough like them

i also spray them with water weekly and leave them in the sun and i clean the cage everyday, and wash it weekly

looking forward for advice if any had the same issue with their flock

regards a

H'mm, did the vet run any tests before making a diagnosis? I'm guessing by bird insects he meant mites? You are right, Dander down spray is not for treating any illnesses or mites, it's for reducing bird dust, so this vet obviously had no clue what he was doing.

Is it possible that your ringneck is plucking his own feathers? If he is not, and you are sure that his feathers are just growing abnormally, I would immediately quarantine him from your other birds and get him tested for Psittacine Beak and Feather Disease (PBFD).

Symptoms of PBFD:
irreversible loss of feathers, shedding of developing feathers, development of abnormal feathers, new pinched feathers, and loss of powder down. Other possible symptoms include overgrown or abnormal beak, symmetrical lesions on the beak and occasionally nails.
Immunosuppression, rapid weight loss, and depression are also possible in later stages of the disease.[/b]

You know that website that I posted the link for, I believe you can order a home sample collecting kit, and mail in the blood sample to them and they will test your bird for the disease. I guess it's not a bad option if you can't find any other qualified vets.

Good luck to you, and please do keep me posted.

Oh my goooodness! What a cutie pie Lala is Heart It's hard to tell what age she is. Are you sure she is female? Because I believe the females eyes will start turning a lighter brown colour as they begin to mature around 3 years old, while the males eyes will remain black. So if you're sure it's a female, and the eyes are still black, then I'd assume it's under 2 years old. If the eyes are a reddish brown, then most likely a more mature bird. And if Lala is a male, it's really hard to tell the age.

Unfortunately, the screaming kind of comes with the cockatoo. It is their natural vocalization, and it's almost impossible to stop. You can however discourage excessive screaming, by not paying her any attention, when she is screaming for attention. Ignore her until she quiets down, and then praise her for being a good girl.

I think the diet you're feeding is pretty good. Try to also incorporate some proteins, like legumes such as kidney beans and chic peas, also nuts are a great source of protein and healthy fats.

Yes, I feed Harrson's Bird food, the high potency coarse kind. And I supplement that with fruits, veggies, nuts, and legumes. It's easier for me, because of my busy schedule, I don't always have time to serve fresh foods, and so with harrison's I can be sure that they are still getting their nutritional needs met.
