Sue, Doctors Fosters and Smith(DrsFostersSmith.com) has a nice first aid kit for birds. It contains styptic powder, gloves, eye wash, steril bandages, scissors, forceps(for broken blood feathers),iodine, adhesive tape etc. Its a really nice kit to have around for emergencies. Not badly priced either. 20.00 dollars. Thanks for telling that Karen!
I have heard you can not use styptic powder (I don't know what it is actually!) on bloodfeathers?
I was wondering what you do when a nail is filed too much or when a bloodfeather occurs? |

Hi Sue, sorry I just caught this today. I have been so busy. It's been so hot here, around 90, and I'm having trouble circulating my koi pond. Unfortunately I've had to go in it and work on it. Yuk! Anyway, you can use styptic powder on broken blood feathers but sometimes it won't stop the bleeding and then the blood feather needs to be pulled out. Luckily I have never had to do this but that is why I have the forceps. As for the bleeding toenails, I use the powder all the time on my dog or my birds. If the powder is not available to you, cornstarch or flour can also be used. Karen |

Don't worry abou it Karen!
90 degrees? That's a lot I just looked it up!
You must be melting!
How are your kois doing today? I hope you will be able to cool their pond. How are the birds, or do you have airco?
I used flour (?) to make pancakes with last time. There wasn't any other stuff available. It worked ok..
(I cut the nail too far) |

Hi Sue, Yes I'm melting! Hot again today and no rain yet. The koi are doing better today. I have two koi ponds with waterfalls but with this heat sometimes they don't get enough oxygen in the bottom of the pond. I had to put in another small pump. My koi are getting very big( around 15 inches) and I think that is part of the problem. I have 10 koi in my big pond(18 feet by 12 feet) and five in my small pond(11 feet by 8 feet).
The birds are doing great! Loving the humidity and squawking up a storm. My MSC2 and my G2 are fully feathered now and look beautiful. Still working on the feather snapping on my M2, but she's such a sweet heart. Hope things are going well for you. Things will be slowing down in a couple of weeks once I get my sons party over with and all the relatives leave but it's been fun. Karen |

Glad to hear that the kois are doing better!
Are you feeding them too much, Karen? LOL!
That must be the reason for them growing!
I am so surprised that you've made it to have your MSC2 & G2 fully feathered. What is your secret?! He he he! |
