Mack broke another blood feather today
the first one was easy to get stopped...but this one was cracked long-ways....
so I got the emergency kit, grabbed the needle nose pliers....
and had to pull it....
I feel sooooooooo bad!!!
he's acting funny now....
kinda tired I think.
he's sitting on his very top perch all fluffed up.....
but he's chirping and pretty alert, so I didn't take him to a vet...
should I though?
the bleeding stopped, but it probably hurt pretty bad to have that feather yanked out!
so I just have a feeling he's fine....just in a bit of pain maybe.
my mom and dad even came home really early just in case... |

I think he will be alright if the bleeding has stopped and the feather is gone. You did the right thing pulling it out. |

yeah I think he'll be just fine.. I'd imagine that the bleeding would have stopped pretty much straight away soon after the broken blood feather is pulled out. but for future reference, if you can stop the bleeding even after the feather is pulled out, pact the open wound with corn starch, this will help it to stop. and also you did a great job pulling out the feather. |

Oh Lynzi, you were sooo brave! Good job on getting Mack's feather out, I'm sure it must've been pretty scary. Oh and plain flour also works as well as corn starch He might be a bit mad at you for pulling that feather but it was for his own good I'm sure he'll forgive you |

I was kinda freaking out a little.....
cuz if I pulled on it he'd freak out and squirm.....so I just closed my eyes and yanked
I'm glad it was the right thing to do!
I would hate to find out that I pulled that feather out and I shouldn't have!!!
thanks everyone!!
he's kinda upset still...so I thought I'd give him a day to relax and just spend some alone time in his cage.....
I think I'll work with him some more later tonight or tomorrow morning....
it was kinda traumatic for the both of us I think! |

Lynzie you were very brave in pulling out the blood feather. I also have had to pull out broken blood feathers on Kacey. It does hurt for a bit but they soon get back to their old selves in no time. Any blood loss for a bird is a lot. They are usually tired and rest most of the day afterwards. |

They say that Cockatiels are just prone to that unfortunately... I used to have a Lutino tiel like Mack once... He would regularly night thrash and break blood feathers.
Terry was the most amazing bird in that I have never heard of a bird who would pull out all of his own blood feathers! One by one, even if it was bad and there were a lot of them:shock: Such a tough little guy! It was good news for me since I never had to do anything (except clean up a bloody mess)!
That was the first Terry, my male tiel... now my female Cuban Amazon is named Terry also haha cute bird name

I used a flat head tweezer (You know like those that you used to tweeze your eyes brow and all that kind of tweezer)... that way I can get a good grip of the broken feathers... once one of my budgies broke his feathers soooo deep that I literally had to dig the tweezer into his wing's flesh to get a hold of the broken feathers.. it was oozing blood, so I had no choice but to do that.. If i have had a pointy ones, it wouldn't have worked.
Oh make sure you have a clean pair that you use only for such situation so you're not likely to infect the wound with whatever... |

those blood feathers are tricky!!!!!!
I have a little emergency kit that I keep in the bird room......
I went and bought some brand new needle nose pliers....then boiled them...that's what I used to pull it out....
I really do hope I don't have to do it any time soon again.....
not the most fun I've ever had. |

I'm hoping I don't have to do it any time soon either. Kacey my tiel is getting a lot of new feather growth in on her healed broken right wing. There are about 4 blood feathers coming in and I have to make sure she doesn't break any of them. She is such a little daredevil, she likes to jump off the table or a chair or whatever she is on. We have to really watch her. I am keeping my fingers crossed that I won't have to. |

Oh yeah I defiitely don't wish it on anyone... it was sooo horrible!! Blood everywhere!! but I had to do it, the blood wasn't stopping and there's no way I could get to the vet... it was 11:30pm.. so they are all closed. Little Quake (budgie) he was such a champ.. wiggled a bit, but he did so good. I had to pack on the corn starch on the wings to stop it from bleeding as even after I pulled the feather shaft out, it was still bleeding like crazy, but it stopped after about two minutes of being corn starched.
Teri I hope Kacey will be alright with all her blood feathers.. so no blood feather pulling for you. |
