Okay......so anyone out there done this?
For example, buying something off E-bay that had been used?
How do you clean it? I'm wondering if it's worth it to even consider it or not. |

Someone gave me a used cage once that she had been using in her parrot rescue. I cleaned it very thoroughly with bleach and water solution. |

Decide yourself if its worth buying by the picture(s) (sorry, I know nothing about Ebay, but I think theres pics). If it is chewed up, flithy, broken, parts look dangerous, etc don't get it. I would throughly sanitize and clean anything I bought second hand. |

Is bleach safe to use to clean with?
I guess my main question is what is a safe sanitizer. |

Yes, bleach is safe, as long as you're not using it in the same room as your birds so they can't breathe it in. Just rinse it and let it dry before you give whatever it is to your birds. Some people here also used apple vinager and water solution for sanitizing, which is completely safe even when used in the presence of your birds. I use that to clean cages sometimes, and it works really well, I just can't stand the smell |

After you clean and sanitize it with bleach, leave it in the full sun to dry for a few days. The sun's UV rays also act to kill off a lot of the viruses and bacteria.

This is what we have done with all the used cages we have brought into the house....
Be careful when buying these older cages, you may be exposing your bird to metal poisoning. Look for thin paint and rust spots. Try to stick with the powder coating if you can. Thier is another bird fair on Nov 5th in Dayton. We are going down to get two cages there ourselfs. |

Yeah, that's the bad thing about buying used off the internet, even if there are pics, you can't really see close up what kind of condition it's in & you don't want to buy something with rust or worn spots. |

It's 10:00 to 4:30 on the 29th (Sunday).
It's at the Raddison Hotel on 23 (North end of 23). Usually LJO is there and they have all the links and stuff like that. |

Thanks for that although they are all way up north, northerners seem to be big on birds here in the uk, I reckon it is the tradition of Pigeon fancying and ferret keeping-obvoiusly not together! You can almost gaurantee that most breeders are from up north and my fave shop is called northern parrots. Perhaps us southerners are too snobby for parrots or something! |
