Okay.......so I've been reading that you can't use ANY of these if you have a bird.
Then what in the world do you guys do to get a nice fresh scent in your homes? I hate it when my house gets that 'stale' smell. You know.....when windows have to be closed up and you can't get a breeze through.
Thanks!!! |

I know what you mean, I hate that stale smell too, but I don't use any of those products in my home.
I don't even use windex, except in the summer when the birds are outside. I use air freshener sprays when they're outside too. |

Simmer some applejuice and cinnimon in a pot on your stove, or put a pie in the oven. For citrus smell simmer some slices of citrus fruits in water on the stove instead of apple juice. Sprinkle baking soda on carpets before vaccuming, and in garbage pails before adding the bag. There are all kinds of natural alternatives to air fresheners. |

Does anyone know if lavender is allowed? Putting small bags of those flowers in the house? |

Very good idea Sherwoods Billie! I'll have to try that.
I don't know about lavender for sure Sue, sorry. I would think it's OK, but just haven't heard anything. |

Wow.....nice tips.
I know for dogs and cats, they say to use lavender to calm them down. It's something natural to use instead of giving them a pill to relax them. At times (when cats are fighting!!) my house will smell like a lavendar farm!!
But I know birds are much different.
The baking soda on a carpet would be good......nice idea too. |

I'm going to be facing a similar dillema soon: my friend and future roommate looooves scented candles, but she understands they are dangerous to my little budgie and she'll have to keep them in her bathroom. I was wondering what alternatives we could use - she doesn't like incense, and I'm not sure if scented oils are dangerous. I'd like a small compromise to keep my friend at least a little happier living with us Any suggestions? |

I love scented candles too & miss not burning them, but Sherwoods Billie had some good alternatives in her post above. |

instead of popourri or scented oils you can put out bowls of dried orange slices, or some pine chips in a bowl sprinkled with almond, vanilla, mint, orange or lemon extract (eg. the natural orange oil used in cooking and baking) Just don't put them where the bird can reach them, but they are nice put on a table next to your favorite reading chair for example. Its all natural scent and not a strong scent at all, just enough to add a hint of scent to the immediate area. |

I'd probably have to put mine in little toille baggies or something so the dogs and cats don't get into it, huh? |

Iv'e had birds for 30 years and have burnt scented candles and use carpet fresh for all those years.I never new that these things are deadly for my birds( have i just been lucky,do we really know that this is bad for them) I light candles every morning. I all so use furniture polish. The only thing that i haven't done is use air freshner in the same room that my birds are in. |

Bird freak, I also burned scented candles throughout about the first 10 yrs of my 'tiels life, becuz I didn't know not to, until Manu came to live with me & I read that it's not good to do.
The candle burning didn't SEEM to have an effect on Poppy the 'tiel, but I guess I don't know that for sure either.
And, I think that some kinds of birds are more sensitive than others to things too, including fumes. |

Ok, apparently, the bird's respiratory system is 100% efficient, in comparison to human's at a lower rate. This means that birds will absorb everything they breathe into their body including harmful chemicals and fumes whereas human can rejects those that are harmful.
So may be you've just been lucky so far that what you've burnt hasn't been deadly to the birds. |
