After careful consideration I registered my birds with DEFRA when the local press advertised for us to do so. Actually they were more interested in people who keep chickens, they were very helpful about what to do if you find a dead wild bird and the best way to dispose of it and what circumstances to report if need be i.e. what steps to take if a number of dead wild birds are found in a small area. We must keep this in proportion, wild birds carry diseases which we need to protect our pets from and the way to do this is to make sure that when we put our birds outside there are no overhanging trees and that our bird food is stored where it can't be reached by vermin which can spread disease. I think we should relax and enjoy our pets but make sure we educate ourselves. The lady I spoke to from DEFRA said that there was no likelyhood of our pets being taken away as they are not thought to be at risk of becoming infected with bird flu. Unfortunately many pet birds ended up in rescue because of the panic stirred up by the press over here.
