| Hot weather |
|
|
Hi Guys,
I am hoping for any ideas on how to try and keep my fids cool during hot weather. We are in the midst of a heat wave here at the moment and I am a bit worried about the little guys while I am at work. Today is 37c and tomorrow is going to be 42c! And next week is going to be more of the same. Its not humid at all, just a horrible hot dry wind off the deserts. I leave a bowl of water in the bottom of the cage so they can swim but I don't know what else to do. Do birds generally cope ok with very hot weather? When I got home yesterday they all had there wings off their bodies and were panting a little. I gave them a good drenching with the hose, but I can't do that when I'm at work. Any help would be great. Thanks |

What about a misting system, you can get the kind of irrigation systems they use in nurseries etc from the hardware and fit it to the avairy, or you could simply get a timing device for the tap and a spray nozle for the hose put on mist, set up the hose so it will spray lightly into part of the avary and set the timer to come on for short periods throughout the day.
Also is the roof made of metal? does this add to the heat? Painting the outside of it a lighter colour will attract less heat. |

Hey Shells,
Sorry I should have clarified. My avairy birds are fine. The roof has insulation and I have a misting system set up. I don't have a timer yet though so they do feel the heat during the day. Its poor Pi and Pepe that I'm worried about. I cant leave them inside because it becomes completely unbearable. I might try the hose idea. I think they would love that. I will buy some timers on the way home. Thanks for the ideas |

Are your birds in the house or outside?
Hmmm... I always thought of parrots as of tropical birds that would tolerate a hot weather. Obviously this is not the case with my tiel and lb. Papug pants and his nose turns red when he is too hot.
In his case it's easy because he is always inside and can enjoy airconditionting during the summer. |

Jeez, strange to read that you're in the midst of a heat wave. It was snowing here the other day!
Strange!
perhaps you can give icecubes in the water bowl? Just a little idea? |

Oh something else I thought of, giving them food with a high water content like fruit to keep their fluids up. |

Yep, Australia is having some weird weather pattern going on... while the East is having horrible hot heat waves, and over here in the West, well we've had three days over 30!!
What I've done in the past, is to freeze fruits and veggies, and give that to them during the day... and also the icecube in the water idea, and misting them as well. But I've got air conditioning, so it's usually ok for the fids even when I'm not home as the house stays kinda cool even when I have the AC turned off. |

Poor Picasso is really feeling the heat today, hotest new years day on record. I keep squirting him but he is dry again in 10 mins, no aircon so I'm keeping him close to me today, can't wait till the storm arrives later in the week to cool things down. |

You know, with you talking about hot weather I feel kind of shitty.. I would almost have made a logo, just like on the dutch site ( http://www.fluffies.org/nl/ ) for the winter.
If I'd put it up, and would have read your posts, I'd probably be even more ashamed than I am now.. What was I thinking! |

That's very cute Sue. I like it.. I don't think you should be ashamed of it in anyway!! Afterall, more of the members are from the Northern hemisphere which I believe is freezing at the moment!! |
