| Keeping a pair of Senegal Parrots |
|
|
Hello, I was planing to get a pair of hand-reared senegal parrots to keep in a large cage I have. I hope they could keep each other company when I was at work! would this work? will they fight? will they remain tame in any way? They would be a pair of brothers or sisters ! Any comments answers or suggestions appreciated. Thanks |

Hi Kasuku
It's very possible that the 2 will love eachother and will be able to share a cage just fine, but sometimes birds are unpredictable. You have to make sure you let the 2 interact with eachother to see how they get along, before you put them in a cge. If you're getting 2 chics from the same breeder, and they've been raised together thus far, then there should be no problem at all. They'll be perfectly fine sharing a cage. Getting a pair of birds shouldn't affect their tameness, as long as you spend adequate time with both of them daily. |

Hi Kasuku! I agree with what has been said. However, do you plan to breed with these birds? My avian vet (behaviorist) doesn't suggest putting two birds of the same species together. He recommends to choose two different kind of birds together.

I agree with Sue. Yes, if you get a pair from the same breeder they will get along fine if they were already living together. If not, it may take some time but usually the same species will get along eventually. The only problem with having a pair of the same species, same sex or opposite sex, in the same cage, they may love each other more than you Pairs aren't for the novice and you may not get the same results of trainability or affection if you were to only have one bird. Something to think about Good luck in your choice! We'll help in any way. There aren't too many of us with same species pairs, unless they're breeding, so our knowledge is limited. |

I've got 2 senegal parrots, Okkie & Troy, both male; not from the same breeder and obviously not kept for breeding purposes.
They are both aprox. 1 1/2 years now. (difference is 3 months)
Okkie came first. 3 months later came Troy. At first I kept them apart for about a week, when the climbing tree was ready I tried to let them get together.... (when you go to "the Dutch side" of this forum, you can see the foto's of this meeting ...in my diary = dagboek)
Now they behave just like real brothers.... one moment they cuddle and feed each other, the next moment they fight and throw one an other from the climbing tree
But, so far so good.
Two of the same species can work out just fine but on the other hand.... it can also go terribly wrong if they don't accept each other! |
