Hi
just recently inherited a yellow cheeked amazon about 36 years old
all is great so far
Dont know too much about parrots
Is it normal for them to spit up some of their food?
Its not all the time but just wanted to make sure
He is talking more than when we first got him and would like some pointers on how to teach them to talk
Thanks He sure is alot of fun

Welcome to fluffies dore100!! A yellow cheeked amazon aka red lored amazon. When you say you just recently inherited, how recent? That's great to hear that he's been around for 36 years too! That means he's been taken care of at some point.

If you just recently got him then I wouldn't say that trowing up is a good thing. His diet may have been changed too dramatically or he could be sick. You should always have an avian exam done when you just get them. Especially if he's throwing up already. A lot of times they regurgitate when they show affection towards their owner. This can take time to develope this kind of bond and love towards one another.

With talking, he may never talk or he could just be holding out on you till he gets to know you better. Give it a good month and you should know what he already knows. It is very difficult to teach an older bird to talk than a younger one. But it can be done Smile

Hi dore! Welcome to Fluffies & big congrats to you!
Boy, seems there are several new Amazon parronts lately!

Does he do a head bobbing motion when he brings the food up? Like CM says, I wouldn't think he would be regurgitating his food for you already, which is something birds will naturally do with someone they've bonded with. But then again, maybe with older birds who have had a long habit of such behaviour, it's something they continue even with new people.

If I were you, I would phone an avian vet & at least ask him about it. And also like CM says, perhaps schedule an appt to get a general check up & get established as a patient.

Wish you both the best of luck Very Happy

hi
thanks for the reponses
We have had him about a month and the regurgitating is only in the last week or so Maybe he likes us already!!!!
He does talk and laughs!! He sounds like a crazy old lady he is so cute
He really gets going when he hears a certain tone in a voice
His diet has changed He is getting more fruits and veggies
But most of the food was food he came with
Will look for an avian vet
guess I will need a bird carrier now
thanks alot and will keep you posted
my children are determined to teach him new words

Awwww, Ike sounds like a very good bird who has been well loved & cared for! It's ashame that his previous parront had to give him up, but understandble under the circumstances.
I'm sure he must miss her very much, & she him. It's so hard on a bird to be re-homed at that late in their lives, especially when they've been with one person for so long.
Lots of love, patience, & understanding!

I'm glad to hear that you keep in touch with the previous parront, or her daughter, & hopefully she'll be able to give you lots of tips, at least as far as what Ike is used to.

It's hard for us here to start from scratch with someone who is new to parronting - there's just SO MUCH amazing stuff to learn. So hopefully you will do a lot of research & don't be afraid to ask any questions, we're all willing to at least try to help Very Happy It does sound like you're off to a great beginning!

Aww Ike sounds like a little darling!!! Sounds like the regurgitating is pretty normal. Smile

and oh, the talking, just keep saying the words to him over and over again but in context though... like when you're leaving you say good bye, and when you see him say hello or i love you, or whatever. i hope that makes sense... if he picks it up great!! if he does't, that's ok, some parrots can only learn so many words in the lifetime.

LOL. That's great.. if the cage is movable, then it's definitely good for him to be with his flock members... and definitely a good way to teach it to talk if he's willing to learn that is!! LOL

Good luck

Considering his age, he may have been regurgitating for his owner because he loved her and now that he's getting used to you guys, he's picking up the habit again because he's becoming comfortable with you all. Just to be on the safe side you should have him checked out. There is the misconseption that parrots are sooo expensive to have a check-up but this is not the case. It's a little more but not that much more. Not enough to scare you Very Happy It only cost me $35 to have my zon checked out and it included a nail trim and wing clip Shocked

Be sure to give him a lot of out of cage time but never left in the house alone out of his cage. Also, try to include him in as many activities as you can. If he's clipped, you can take him on car rides, go to the park or even sitting in the back yard Very Happy They love it! You may want to consider purchasing a flight suit or feather tether as a precaution in case his wings weren't clipped properly.
