| new cage, will he settle? |
|
|
i have been thinking of getting frankie a new cage the one he is in now i got with him and its abit of well...lets say and eyesore!!!!
the one i have seen is bigger than the one i have at the mo but is also miles better,
do you think he will settle into a new cage, he has been in that one most of his life, and i dont really want to stress him out to much as of the fact that he is getting on so well,
i would be very grateful for your opinions,
cheers

I heard that you can introduce the cage slowly by putting it near his old one and letting him explore it till he's comfortable, then give him more time in it before making the swap, keep the old cage around where he can see it till he's settled, if he thinks he's picked the new one he'll feel more in control of his environment rather than like he's been evicted. |

Great idea Shell! That's the way I'd do it too! I'll bet Frankie would love a new & bigger cage after he "picks it out" & decides it's home Keep food & water & toys in the new one as well while he's getting to know it. I bet it'll be fun watching him check out & explore his new home! |

Hi Sami
Frankie shouldn't have any problems settling into his new cage. How long was Frankie in his old one's for? |

they got him when he was 12 weeks old and hes 9 months now so he has been in there for 6 months
bless him it i thins mankey white thing and the stand we got with it we dont have under the cage coz if h moves in the cage the cage wobles like mad!!! lol
but the way he was when we got him i didnt think there was much point in getting a new cage till we knew he settled in coz we cant have him attacking us because my sister is only 2!!!
but hes lie a new parrot hes an angel!!!!

I agree totally with everyone. It might be a bit clustered with 2 cages but it's for the best. Let him check it out and give him the time he needs. |

Hi Sami
Apollo was in his old cage for probably around the same amount of time as Frankie, when I got his new and bigger way bigger cage, I kinda just put him in there... and he loved it!! He didn't care one bit that it was a strange cage, but he took to it like wild bush fire!! To be honest I don't think you'll need to worry too much... Will the cage come assembled?? If it isn't, when you're assembling it, let Frankie 'help' out... it'll help a great deal with the transition... I let Apollo hang out at on the cage while hubby build it... Check out my diary for photos of the new cage adventure... Frankie will enjoy the out time and also the company... It'll make him feel important!! LOL...
Otherwise, if you think that they cages will be too clustered, then try just the new cage and close observe for any distress signal... If there's none, to be honest I really don't think it'll be a problem just leaving him in the new cage like I did with Apollo. He was already trashing his new place by the time I returned from the garden after doing a little bit of gardening outside... Cheers |

well it makes me feel betta to hear that, i will be the one that has to build it and he will probs just sit on the back of his chair (well the one he has claimed! lol) and watch he does with every thing else but even if i just leave the old one there for a couple of day maybe,
but if it was me in the cage hes in now i would quite willingly swap for a new one!!!!
thanks every one

I agree with everyone, I bought my keets a new cage, put it next to their old, they werent no dummies, they realized that it was bigger and never stepped foot again into the old cage |

That's funny Demeter! You're right, they aint no dummies!
I don't think I'd have any problem whatsoever getting my out going macaw into a new cage, but I think I'd have to do some manueveing to get my shy, afraid of anything new 'tiel to move! |

Samijo, Chaquita's previous owners said they attempted to get her a bigger better cage and just put her in it without letting her get used to it being around and letting her check it out in her own time and she started plucking her feathers. So when they put her back into her old cage she quit the plucking. Just something to consider. Not all birds will just jump into a new cage and be happy. To play it safe I would let your bird investigate it on it's own. |

Like I mention before, I guess is to always look for distress signals from the bird when you put him in there. Observations can come in so handy when it comes to birds. hehehe |

i will be keeping a close eye on him
we are also moving soon to some where with a garden hopefully!
so i m going to keep the old cage for when we are out till i get him a perch for out there, he will enjoy that, he loves going out but wont put his harness on yet! i have managed a couple of ties to get it over his head but he can take it off before i fasten it so he goes every where in his carrier, but unless we go in the car we cant go far coz it weighs a ton!!! lol
thanks again every one
