Hi, my name is Eliot, I just got two of these birds...dont know what breed they are exactly...all I know is that they are parrots. I will post pics later so you guys/gals can tell me what kind of parrots they are, its a male and female.
I read quite a few things here on this forum, I'm glad I found it too, now I know that feeding them seeds (like the first owners thought was best) is not all that healthy. I'm going to try and feed them a banana today and maybe some veggies like a carrot or brocolli. You all should have seen these poor birds...when we picked up the cage... the trash plate was just sick, all the poop, feathers, and seeds where all stuck together...with spider webs holding all that together..and even a tiny nest of cockaroaches(sp?)....isnt that just nasty? I'm going to try and bathe both birds tomorrow with some mist bottle. The cage is now VERY clean, its actually white and not beige lol. they were very loud when I first got them...then once I took them out of the cage (they didnt want to, they kept trying to stay inside) and in a box I fed them some Pedialite (regular no flavor) because they had not been fed or given anything to drink for about 5 days...can you believe that? I had to rescue these poor fellas, back to the point....when I cleaned the cage and put them back in there (which I was suprised because they didnt try to bite me or try to fly away) they got VERY quiet, not screaming and going crazy anymore...I'm happy .
right now my only concern is their diet and their cage, the cage is not big...in my opinion it should be bigger since there are two of them. I'll post pics of them tomorrow. Sorry for the long post. Their names are Lee and Lu |

Hi Eliot, when I read about your little birds it reminded me so much of when I first got one of my little Senegals. I'm not an expert but I would say that it's best to make any changes in diet gradually, especially if they've been malnourished as they might not withstand digestive upsets too well if they've been weakened. It sounds like they're lucky to be alive, not having food or water for 5 days. It may be best to mix the new food just a little at first with the old food, gradually increasing the new food and decreasing the old food. Likewise with fruit and veg, introduce it slowly. It's a very necessary part of a parrots diet but until they can eat healthy amounts perhaps you could add some vitamins if the avian vet thinks it's advisable. My little boy was doing repititive behaviour like zoo animals that aren't given enough stimulation and the advice I got was to make him come out of the cage otherwise he would go insane, but that was extreme and you can probably do things more gradually with them. By the way I don't know if you're aware of it but avocados are toxic to birds. Perhaps you could describe the size and markings of your little friends, there may be people using this site who are very knowlegeable about whichever variety they are, all the best |

Thanks for the info Julie, my parrots are Green Cheek Conyers, I bought them a toy and new and better food, it has a few pellets in there and a lot of other things that they would like. Right now I'm just going to work on their diet and slowly try and work their behaviour out. I will be upgrading to a bigger cage though...I dont like seeing them in such a small cage. |

Hi Eliot, glad to hear about the new cage, I did that for my little boy too and it made a lot of difference to him. I found it gave him an interest when I got about 6 or 7 of the little canary pots that just hook onto the cage and I put little treats in them and put them in different parts of the cage and I got some rope perches so that he could look for them like he would if he was wild still and he enjoyed looking for them although I still put his main food in as normal. Green Cheek Conures are very sweet and I believe that they can also learn to talk. It would be good to know how they are getting on in the next few weeks. Are you going to post some pictures, it would be nice to see them. |
