| new parrotlet/water problem!!!! |
|
|
hi! i just got a parrotlet yesterday. Alita is about 4 months old and i got her from a pet shop (trusted), not a breeder. I brought her home and got her in her cage, and after awhile she found her food. but i'm worried because when i left for work, she still hadn't been drinking any of her water. i have a fountain and a dish with water, to see which one she will like better. she had the dish at the pet store, but i'm afraid of her drowning in the dish since that happened to a canary i had when i was younger!!
should it be taking this long for her to get used to the new surroundings? should i be concerned that she's not drinking anything?
i don't know a lot about them, so i don't know if i should be worried or not!
thanks!!

Kate,
Birds drink very little, in fact they get some of the mositer they need from thier food, I have hardley ever seen my smaller birds drink. If she is eating, I would not worry to much. Watch her dropings they will be solid with a little bit of water around them. Also get a scale one that measures grams, a diet scale will work fine. But weigh her every day for a while and write her weight down in a log. If she starts to loss alot of weight or start to gain alot of weight, then get concerned. These are two of the best ways you can tell if there is a problem.
You can try sticking some orange wedges in the bars of the cage. She may take a few days to figure out that it is food. But when she does...
The Water dishes are fine if, they hang from the side of the cage. Do not put something in the bottom of the cage and don't make it deep enough for them get into trouble.
We allow our birds a bath, they love it.

you can see what we use for them to bath in. But this is supervised only. We do not leave them alone...
Have fun with you new little one

Congratulations on your new parrotlet!
Mine was two months old when I got her, and the breeder had me leave food and water on the floor of the cage (!) until I was certain that she had discovered the food and water containers fixed to the bars of the cage. For a water container, I used one of those ceramic mug lids, inverted. It held about 1/8" - 3/16" water but had to be changed several times a day. My bird actually drank quite often, but she was on a diet of crumbles only. It took her three days to find everything. (I suspect she'd have used them sooner if she had been big enough to REACH them.)
At four months, your bird will probably find things faster--especiallly if that fountain makes noise. Like jrmno says, juicy fruits and veggies will offer Alita some moisture while you are at work. Now, with veggies in my bird's diet, I only see her at the water dish once or twice a day. |
