overheated  Reply with quote

Hello, I had a near fatality this weekend, I was giving Max (B&G Macaw)a shower and left him in a little long and he overheated, he could not step up on my arm and was very weak and breathing hard. I placed him on our bed under a fan so he could cool down, after he cooled down and his breathing was back to normal he got sick. After several hours he seemed back to normal eating, drinking and playing. I cannot get a vet appointment until Thursday, is there any concerns? He seems totally normal this morning.

Thanks

Besides the heat of the water, a danger is the chlorine in it. Chlorine in the water enters the air during a shower. A long shower could fill the shower stall with enough to be a health threat. Panting and nausea could easily be the result.

By the way, many birds prefer a barely warm to cool shower. I've heard of some that prefer cold water.

Thanks, I have well water so ther is no Chlorine in it. I was just concerned about the effects of being overheated. Max acted just as I would expect a person to when overheated. Today he seems fine, but he will be going for checkup this week.

Thank goodness Max is okay Smile I bet he'd like a lukewarm to cold shower much better than hot. Also, it would be best not to leave him unattended during the shower... it doesn't need to be that long, just enough to throughly wet him Smile
