Potty Training!  Reply with quote

We want teach Dobby to go to the bathroom in a certain place his cage instead of allover the place! We are potty training him to go on newspaper when he is out but what about when he is inside? It gets annoying when he poops in his drinking water!

to be honest, I don't like potty training birds. sometimes they might hold on for too long because they can't find a piece of paper to poop on. That's just my opinion. If any of my birds going to poop in their water, I just make sure I change it. another way you can make sure or cut down on poop in water bowl is to have perches away from the bowls, or that the bowl is clear from perches on top. Generally that's why they get pooped into. There are the occasional poop in the water bowl because he is happened to be facing away from the waterbowl and he needs to go right that moment. That doesn't happen very often here with me.

the pearches are all over the place and Dobby's personality won't let him hold in his poop. if he really needs to go he will go weareever!

that's just it, they don't do that now, but if you were to train them to hold or only go on a piece of paper, they will learn to hold in their poop and they will 'hurt' themselves doing so.

If you want to train them, make sure that they'll always have a few 'options' of pooping.

Well, what about pooping in a certain part of the cage? Maybe in a certain corner, or in a bowl. When I bought my first budgie, she wouldn't poop ANYWHERE other than a small bowl in her cage! ut after she got used to us, she became a "typical pooper".
I miss her sooooo much! Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad Crying or Very sad [/b]

After I removed the grate from the bottom of the cage, my parrotlet organized two places to poop in the cage. Outside the cage, however, she goes anywhere. There is an old thread called potty training which has some good ideas on how to do it properly so that the bird's health is not in danger. It is probably from spring or summer of 2006.

After a year of clean drinking water, she started pooping in it, so I fixed a twig at a funny angle so that she was not so tempted to pearch with her rear over the water bowl. That solved the problem completely.
