| Quarantine? |
|
|
I'm thinking about getting a second parrot to keep Papug company. I haven't decided what kind yet. Initially I had a lovebird in mind but from this forum I get the impression that they may be arrogant little birdies and bully my shy cockatiel
My question is for those of you who have more than one bird. Did you quarantine the second bird after you brought it home? If so, for how long? |

Hi Papug.
Glad you're thinking of getting a second bird!!
When I brought my new budgie babies how, I quarantined them for 5 weeks/35days. They had just met my other birdies a few days ago.
Hope this help.

ooopes, I forgot to mention that too. I do keep them in seperate room, with the new birds room door always kept shut.
I always change my clothes as well and make sure I scrub up clean before I go to my other birds. That's just my way of making sure that they'll all live happily ever after. |

So regardless of what kind of birds you have - I have two parakeets now and will be getting a african grey shortly - they should be kept in different rooms for about a month? |

Hi Wfuller
Yes like Shirin said, it is necessary to quarantine it for at least a month or so away from the other bird... the longer the better. Even if the breeder guaranteed me that the bird is perfectly healthy, I would still quarantine them. The only time that I do cut the quarantine short is if I get a complete check up from the vet.. the full blood panel, and all the different tests... and it comes back completely clean, then I don't mind cutting the quarantine short. Oh sometimes, it's probaly good for them to stay apart to settle down before meeting the rest of the feathered flock!! |

yep, you need to quarantine your new bird. take it to the vet for a check up within 2 weeks of purchase and have your existing bird checked at the vet if you haven't already. I made the mistake of assuming because all the birds came from the same pet shop around the same time that if any were carrying anything they would have already been exposed |
