hi Daisysis.
Budgies are real little fighters for life. They wont show signs of illness until it's way too late. I guess this is true for all bird.
Just from reading your post about the little one, yes I do believe that he is going to need more than prayers to pull him through. Please please please if you could find him another avian vet, or even a regular vet that are knowledgable in birds.
Him sitting on the bottom of the cage is the first sign of illness and having droopy wings doesn't help. Unless it's extremely hot there where you're at, which I can't imagine since it's the winter, it means your bird isn't well.
does he sleeps with one feet tucked up under the him? or both feet on the Perch? Birds generally likes to sleep on the top most perches, it's just one of those things that makes bird feels safe and secure. If he's sleeping in the bottom perch, chances are he is not well. He may be eating and drinking and all the rest of it, but this could just be him trying to hide the illness.
When the previous owner told you that the little one is sick, did he tell you exacctly what is wrong with him? has he taken the little guy to the vet before? Obviously he is giving you his little budgie in trust that you'll take care of him and provide for his needs. you said that he told you that he couldn't afford to keep him anymore, that would means that he's entrusting the little one's every need to you. I think you owe the guy that much to take the little one to the vet. I'm sorry if I come across as arrogant, but I havce 24 budgies, and if anyone of them remotely look like they are sick, the very least I would do for them to at least ring the avian vet to find out if he or she needs to be at the vet office ASAP.
Sorry to ramble on. good luck with Pops. |

Oh just to add a couple of things...
Is Pop active like a budgie should be? And is he chirping along nicely? From one of your previous posts, you said that he's over 10 right? I guess that is getting on in Budgie's age, but they can live a fair while longer if treated and taken care of correctly. He might not be as active as a younger budgie would be, but still I've seen and heard of 'pensioner' budgies that can keep up with a 'toddler' budgie. he should still be chriping a heck of a lot more as well.. I have five indoor budgies and boy they sing non stop all day long! there's never a quiet moment here in my house.. If I want some really quiet moment at home, I need earplugs!
Another thing... Like Sue already mention, if Pop's is sick, then he'll be using a lot of it's energy to keep warm, which means, he won't have much energy to fight of the illness, which means that the illness will probably take over very quickly. Keeping the bird warm if you think that he's sick is a very very good idea. this help him to keep warm without using too much of his reserved energy to generate heat. |

I just came across this post, and wondered what the update is... how is the little guy doing? I hope well
"Parakeet" refers to many different parrot (Psittacine) species, who have the general characteristics of a long tail, and typically a smaller head and beak than the "Parrots". Budgies are a type of Parakeet, but when most people hear the word "parakeet" they know it means Budgie
