Had a bad fright today, some toast got stuck in the toaster and the fire alarm went off. The toaster nearly caught fire and the little bungalow I live in was filled with smoke. I opened all the doors and windows to clear the smoke, luckily the room where the Mischief and Tim are was the least affected and they seem ok. While the doors were open my dog Aimee who I thought was safely in the back garden made her escape through the front door when I was checking what else I could do to clear the smoke. I had to leave the back door and all the windows open while I searched for Aimee. I went to the local Police Station twice and she had been seen but the Police couldn't catch her. Luckily my son who lives five minutes away was home today and he could help me. We spent three hours looking for her and then I realised I'd forgotten to check with the Dog Warden who had hear of a loose dog fitting her description about two miles away near a Womens Prison. My son got there before me and asked at the Prison if anyone had seen a loose dog and they said that she'd got under a barrier into the Prison grounds where Prison Staff park their cars. Because she had been frightened and disorientated he had a job catching her but luckily she is now home safe and sound. I'm keeping a close eye on Mischief and Tim but they seem their usual lively selves and don't seem to have suffered any ill effects. I couldn't put the cages outside as I don't have anywhere under cover and it was cold and raining hard. On a lighter note I always thought Aimee had a delinquent streak in her, maybe she was checking out the Prison for future reference. I'm trying to get a shed for the garden so that I'll have somewhere to put Mischief and Tim in an emergency but I can't afford one at the moment. Aimee does have my phone no. on her collar but she was too frightened to go to anyone and she has no road sense. |

Omigosh, how scary! I'm very glad that you had a working fire-alarm and that your fids are well. You must be pretty shaken up by it! I'm glad your furry companion is fine and well too

I'm so glad eyeryone is OK after all that! I can only imagine what a nervous wreck you must have been, you poor lady!
I have to wonder if the prisoners & the guards had a great time seeing a pretty dog on the property I'm sure it made their day!
Boy, you deserve a little nap on the couch after all that excitement!! |

Hi Yupra and Cathy, thanks for the messages, it was pretty scary. In Sept 2002 I came home from shopping to find the Fire Brigade and Police where I used to live because we'd had a house fire and the Fire Brigade were great as they'd got all the birds out of the house, at the time I still shared the house with my ex partner and he and I had four birds between us, Goffey the Goffins Cheeky and Tim Sennies and of course Mischief, the dogs had a run in the garden so weren't affected, all the birds were fine, the fire was cause by a double sided make-up mirror being left on a window sill, the sun had shone on the mirror which had heated up and caught the cuitains alight in one of the upstairs bedrooms. Luckily there was no-one at home at the time except the animals. It was 7 months before we could live in the house again so I would always have a fire alarm and make sure that the if it's not the type that's connected to the mains electricity that the battery is working. What worries me with my fids is of course that they are so sensitive to things like smoke. They seem fine and Tim's doing his usual circling of the room, since he learned to fly again he finds it such a joy but Mischief likes to be carried around and spoilt. I really dread housefires. Hey I like Firemen, but not that much. |

Well Julie, not to be little our scarey day. But to heighten the awareness, of the need to have a plan. Recently, We had a scarey day ourselfs. Wednessday night. The alarms went off for a tornado watch for our area. We turned on the radio. They recommanded that we go down to the basement. It took us almost 30 mins to get everybody ready to move down stairs. By then the watch had been canceled. So we have to do some hard thinking, about our plan, which did not work.
Please everybody have an emergency plan and practice it at lest once. Now true we have a lot of birds. But we would have lost all of them Wed if something would have happened.
Our old plan, get the travel cages out of the RV and move them...
Our new plan is get some pet store boxs we can keep in the bird room folded up. We will see how this works....

Glad it all ended well for you. My dog Jasmine is a terror when it comes to escaping and she has no road sense. Luckily she mostly goes to the field up the lane but it is horrible until you get them home. Good point about having an emergency plan. Sadly my cousins Grey was killed by a house fire last year, or at least smoke inhalation. I'm going to test my alarm tomorrow and talk to my neighour about getting the birds out in an emergency if I am out. |

A couple of months back, A good friend from the Rescue, had to stand there while the police held her back, and listen and watch all her birds burn before her eyes. That was a sad day for the local bird lovers, everybody knew her and we all had a good cry.. |

John maybe in view of what your friend suffered I'll turn things around in my head and think how lucky I am that nothing like that happened. We had a smoke alarm where I lived before but there was no-one home when the fire happened. My dog Aimee is afraid of thunder and I think she ran like she did the other day because my smoke alarm is very loud it's run on electricity and also she had an instinctive fear of smoke. The bird cages are on wheels and it would be quicker to just wheel them out as I'm in a bungalow which is like a little ground floor house with no upstairs. I hope your friend can come to terms with her loss and I'll be thinking of her.
The thing I didn't realise about fire is the amount of damage caused by smoke, even if the fire isn't very extensive, also just how little time you have to get out.
Please everyone if you have a mirror on a window sill move it as the sun can heat it and cause a fire which is what happened to us in 2002. |
