I find sometimes too if you cut up a lemon and put it in the cage it freshens it up a bit +plus the birds like a munch on it....its a win win situation |

I have a blue and gold macaw, and I think I know what your talking about, it's a faint odor, but yes, similar to that of pigeons, it has never really bothered me, and its not usually noticeable unless the cage needs a good cleaning, but if it bothers you, I would definitly reccomend and air purifier, I just picked up one on ebay, its an ecoquest flair, it's an ozone generator, I wouldnt put it directly next to the bird cage because it generates ozone, but it works great! I have ferrets also, and 3 cats, I used to be able to smell the litter boxes when I walked in, now I smell nothing, I was really suprised that it works so well. It almost works too well, I will almost forget to change the litter box
I got mine on ebay

I would also try canopy cage cleaner and cage sheild.

The cleaner smalls like orange, and the cage sheild makes cleaning easier.
Hope this helps!

Hey Tina, did you try lining the bottom of his cage, above the bars, with paper towels? This way the poo doesn't get between the bars making it so much easier to clean since the cage is so big and heavy.
I would take the advice on taking him to the vet. Pigeons have stinky poo probably because of all the diseases and bacteria they carry. He may have some sort of infection AND it could have something to do with his diet since he's hooked on people food and you're still in transition on that.
I like the lemon idea too. Maybe if he likes it and eats it, it'll freshen his poo a bit too |

Hi Tina
Are you asking about the bicarb soda? does his cage have a grate thing that stops Taylor from reaching the bottom of his cage when it catches his poo? If it does have that, then you can sprinkle it there. more around the area where he would stand to sleep over night since that's where the 'pile' will be!! LOL... otherwise, you can just leave the box close to the cage. |

He never ever ever goes to the bottom of his cage. The cage is like 7 feet tall and he's always on the top of it hanging on a swinger. I think I'll just sprinkle it all around, thanks |

Well in that case it's ok... Not that it really matters as I'm so bicarb soda is safe for bird. |

Hey FBJellyBean, did the purifier help with the ferret odors too? I have 2 ferrets as well and totally clean their cage every other day and wash their hammock and sack once a week and bathe them about once a week too. Their scent glands have been removed and desexed, but their poo just lingers in the air I can't get them to use litter because they just play and burrow in it I have to use hampster corner pans because I tried the ferret corner pans and they just poo around it, little stinkers anyway. I think their poo is getting stinkier with age, their about 2 1/2 now.
I had to take my little boy, Disco, to the vet yesterday because he was having trouble going pee and it was kinda brownish colored. Now he's on bladder infection meds for 2 weeks, twice a day. Their so wiggly making it difficult to give him his meds |

There are acrylic cages around that have air filters in them, I don't know if they are easier to clean or if they will reduce the odour. Using something different on the floor of the cage might help if you move the furnature in the cage around so his poos are more likely to go inside the cage than all over it. |

Sorry to hear about your little guy, thats too bad
But, yes, the air puifier works much better than I thought it would, Im always skeptical! But I have my ferret cage and my cat litter box near the entrance, and before I got it, you would always smell it when you first come in (no matter how often I clean, it seems) But the air purifier took care of all the odors! 100%! I would definitly reccomend one to anyone who has pets!
The downside is that they can be pricey, but like I said, I got mine on ebay for almost half the normal cost, and I'm happy I did!

You also might want to try putting a bit of poo in the litter box, and keeping the rest of the cage clean, sometimes that will encourage them to use the box.
and if you have issues with BO, you might want to try bathing them less often, frequent bathing causes them to secrete more oils, and more stinkiness.
My absoloute favoprite ferret product is called NOVA PEARLS made by Tomlyn. It's a conditioning deodorizing spray, it works great, and makes them look sleek and shiny and soft, give it a shot if you can find it (its hard to find)
