| stinky Taylor,please help! |
|
|
Hi guys, it's been a while since I wrote. Have a big problem. Taylor is doing fine with us, he comes out for a couple of hours a day, we even take him outside and since his wings are clipped, he stands on a perch for hours. He loves my kids, especially my boys. He don't like us adults much, because we're the one that take him to the vet and do all the torture. Anyways, even though he tries to bit us adults,I am okay with it, because he is very friendly with my kids. I just have one problem, He stinks I clean his cage twice a day , but the stinky smell is still lingering in the room. I know that air freshners and aoromas are toxic so I stay away. I do clean the floor with pine cleaners and I open the windows so Taylor doesn't get affected. All this is not helping, certain smell is still around. Even people and guests who come in from outside say it stinks in the house and I hate it. I am a clean freak, and I am used to people complementing me on how beautifully clean smelling my house is. I've heard about air purifiers. Do you guys have an advice or a suggestion? please help. This is a big problem, and it could lead me to selling him because my nose detects even the tiniest odors. |

What kind of smell is it you're talking about? can you describe it? Do you think it's actually the bird that smells? I read in your other thread regarding allergies that the cage doesn't smell too good, could it be just that? |

well, when tailor poops he gets it all over his cage too, and the way the cage is, it's hard to clean it with cloth, because it gets in between the bars. You have to take the whole cage outside to disassemble it and clean it. The cage is too big to take through the door. This is one of my problems, the poop gets embedded in between the bar spaces and it's hard to clean. Also whenever he poops, I have to clean it right away or my whole living room smells like bird poop. I mean I understand that a little smell is acceptable, but when it gets to be noticable by your guests, it's a problem. |

Also, I forgot to tell you that I did clean his cage with soap and water when it was desassembled outside my house. It was clean before it entered my house, but it still had that farmy smell. She had that cage in a farm for four years. So. what I am saying, it could be the cage or it could be the continous poop. Either, or is there an economically safe method to control the odor withought too much damage to my pocket |

Really seriously?? Taylor's poop actually smell?? To be honest, I really don't know much about Macaws poop smelling, but I do know that Apollo's (cockatoo) poop doesn't smell. The only time that it'll smell really bad is if I've had a busy week, and I haven't gotten around to cleaning his cage for a week or so, then I can sort of notice the smell a bit, but even then, it's not very smelly... so to speak.. May be you need to take Taylor to an Avian vet to check it out, he might have some sort of infection may be to cause the smell?? not sure, may be someone with a macaw can help you out with this one. Sorry. |

I am not saying it smells like humans, it just smells like normal birdy smell, but I still need to know a way to control the odor. I mean, maybee if you were here you would say:what are you talking about, there is no smell.Maybee I am a little too much, and I should just shut up. All I am asking for is some advice on how to make it smell nice without killing this poor soul |

Other than perhaps a chicken coop, I've never smelled an odor from any kind of bird poop. |

My husband used to have pigeons, and it smells ecactly like pigeon poop. It is not a bothering smell for some people, but to me is just annoys me. Anyway, my husband is thinking of installing an air purifier. We'll see how that goes |

i found a cleaner called 'keep it clean' its a 3 in one (cleaner, deodorant and disinfectant) i found it in a pet shop near me and the bloke who owns it breads african greys, and swears by it! it costs me around £2 a bottle and is suitable for birds,
i use it to clean his cage and when i clean him out (daily) i spray the paper and the bottom of his tray with it, leave it for a couple of mins and the wipe it off and brings the poopy off well!!!
if thats any help i will post a pic in my diary under cleaner or some thing

Hey Tina
I just checked with a bunch of Macaw breeders, they said that macaw poop should be odourless. I do realised that sometimes we do go over board with smells and stuff, but they recommend that unless the the morning plop that you can smell only, to take the bird to be check by a vet as it may be a bacterial infection in the intestine that may be causing the actual odour.
Oh are the poo formed nicely?? |

Yes, his poop looks okay. It's dark and loopy and then there is the white urate around it. It doesn't stink, but it has a certain smell that annoys me. I recognize it's bird poop and it just bugs me to have it inside the house lingering. It might not be bad, but it's a different smell. Actually it smells like a house cleaner or something. Not bad, but I realize it as bird poop and it gets to me. I just have to mask the odor by using scented cleaners and then we'll see. Thanks cheeta. I troubled you some. Like it doesn't stink, but it has a smell to it. |

Oh, Ok fair enough. I'm not sure how safe it would be to use scented cleaners. I was wondering have you tried using bicarb soda? Sometimes I find that that helped with the musky smell around the cage if I havent cleaned it in a bit. Good luck with it. |
