| Together you and your parrot |

Just wondering how much time people and their parrots spend together for socializing.I personnally spend at least 2-3 hours a day with Mylo after work, and all weekend Saturday and Sunday and when ever i have time off.I give Mylo a break after 3 hour intervals back into his cage to rest during full days. Also before l leave work he has about 10 minutes with me. |

I'm one of the very lucky ones. I'm a stay at home mom. My human kids are in highschool, two boys one 16 and one soon to be in college, so most of my time during the day is devoted to my birds and they are out all day. The only time they go in their cages is if I happen to run errands and at night. My husbands job is in another state and he only comes home on weekends so that also gives me more one on one time with them. It does get a little lonely sometimes without more contact with my husband so if there are times on this site that I ramble on you'll know why. Luckily I have my birds and good neighbors or I would probably go nuts!LOL Karen |

I too am a stay at home mom but I can't let all my guys stay out together because they fight and I'm afraid they will hurt each other.....so I start early by letting them out one at a time.....I'd say about 2hrs each....everyday! I wished I could let them all out together but they keep flying over to the others and fights break out!! Pam |

Hi Pam, I'm extremely lucky that my Too's pretty much stay to themselves. All their cages and play gyms are right next to eachother and they all stay in their rightful place but I never leave them alone because we all know it just takes a minute for something dreadful to happen. My MSC2 was adopted last summer and my G2 was adopted three months ago and everybody seems to coexit with my M2,who we've had alone for six years, just great. I think they are all alittle afraid of one another. The only one that tries to venture on a different cage to check it out is my M2, but then she gets scared and jumps off. They all play by themselves so well. It's like they have been together forever. Karen |

Hi Greg,
When I had Olly - I pretty much had Olly out only for an hour a day as he was so young.... and he used to drop off to sleep once he got back in his cage, but as he was not clipped he used to fly around the room screaming his head off in delight (well I thinkit was lol) 3 or 4 times....
As my new bird (a pionus) is not handreared or handtame yet, I will have to see when he/she gets home....
I will be getting Pi next Tuesday - after my friends Greyhounds have gone home (they are staying with me Saturday until Tues morning) So I thought that it would be better to get Pi once the Dogs have gone...

Hi everyone, good too read that there are routines happening for our parrots, for l find that important in communicating with them.(they must have some sort of body clock )for Mylo alway's around 4.45pm when l arrive home from work becomes excited by screeming and wolf whistling, and mumbleing hello which sounds funny but geting better all the time.Especially when he hear's me at the front or the car arrive. As for your Greyhounds fionam very good idea waiting for l find the first 48 hours is important for a new parrot to settle down and get to know it's surroundings. |

Fi,
I agree with Greg that waiting until the visiting dogs are gone was best. Comming to a new home will be tressful enough with out the dogs around.
My Linus usually gets about 5 hours out of cage time. I wake him up at 10:00am and feed him lunch and we play about an hour, I go back to the office while he plays in his cage and watches TV. Then I come home at 5 and he stays out until bedtime around 10PM.
Sometimes he will not stay on his play tree (he is fully flighted) but insists on flying to the computer and chewing the keyboard or mouse. If I have to put him back on his tree 3 times in a row he gets 10 minutes in "Birdy Jail", Usually after he is paroled he will stay on his tree un til I give him his signal to fly to me. Then he flies to my arm for some cuddle time!
He is starting to mumble Birdy Jail which sounds like "bur dee gelllll" LOL |

It depends on the day. Sometimes I spend all day, sometimes just an hour.. They are fine with that most of the time..
Sometimes they are travelling with me on one of our outtings.. |

Linus' favorite is a video called "the bird sitter video" It is in the same line of the "cat sitter" or dog sitter videos. Mostly just different parrots playing, eathing, and flying around in the avairy. He also likes the baby Einstein videos and Blue's Clues.
Once, I left the Nature Channel on and when I came home he was really upset. I looked at the TV and a show about Birds of Prey was just ending. My mom thinks I am crazy, but I think he was afraid of the TV hawks. Now he only gets video on the DVD player so I can be sure he doesnot see anything scary. |

Your mum might think l'm crazy too,but T.V. for a parrot or bird, is like giving your bird a mirror in it's cage same thing.Mylo attacks his mirror in my computer room everyday when he meets it for he see's another parrot like him in it.After a few moments he settles.Even when l approach the mirror to show him my face on the mirror(hasn't cracked yet )he looks and thinks about it, then realizes it is not real. But what makes the mirror funny is when l'm not looking(so he thinks) he look's like he is communicating with himself .So l can understand when your parrot can get upset when it's see a bird of prey on T.V. for l would to, if l was left at home an saw my worst enemy Good choice for video/dvd. |
