what to do in the meantime?  Reply with quote

my tiel, molly, has been living with my parents for the past 5 days while i was packing up to come home from college - today i arrived home to find my sweet molly chipper and quite happy to see me, but with some poo smeared near her vent and on her tail.

I know this is not normal, but I am not sure whether this is a recent thing, or whether she merely got a little grubby during her trip home in the travel cage. I have also noticed her leaving some wattery stools (although this could be because of the lettuce she was snacking on earlier- she has also had normal looking stools). I have been keeping a close eye on her and she appears to be acting like her usual self (and eating fine), but for some reason I feel worried Embarassed.

I know my mother was letting her snack on some dubious things as well (i.e. waffles & other birdy junk food Mad)
I set her up to see the avian vet just in case, but the earliest apt. was for tuesday morning.

i have given her some apple juice, and I am keeping the room she is in cozy and warm - is there anything else i should/could be doing? Would it be bad for me to give her a shower/bath if she is potentially ill? (It just makes me sad seeing her with dirty feathers like that Crying or Very sad).

thanks

Hi Mollybird Very Happy I would venture to say that if she is acting like her normal self it's safe to give her a bit of a shower.
The poo on her vent & tail feathers is probably nothing, but since you're concerned about it, I'd say you did the best thing to schedule an appt. It wont hurt to have her checked out. And if you're feeling it's unecessary come Tues, you can always cancel. On the other hand, if she does seem to get sick before then, sitting fluffed up & quiet more than normal, or her plops get worse looking, hopefully you can call & talk to the vet about it.
Hopefully it was a case of nerves from a different environment, or a change of diet & everything will be fine Very Happy

my budgies get dirty vent feathers all the time!! it's funny coz I think sometimes they are just too darn lazy to clean up after themselves!! there's two that I see are constantly cleaning their vent, whereas the other few do it every now and then.. hehe

The watery poop could very well be due to the lettuce, they are pretty much moisture and that's it.. Very Happy Like Cathy said, it's wont hurt to have a check up, and if you're happy with how Molly looks by the time the appt comes around, you can cancel it. Very Happy

messy poo  Reply with quote

molly, I recently found out that birds just do not poo, but they pee also. The normal thick green with white in it is poo/ nitrates, the more clearer & thinner consistancy could well have ben wee wee. When in doubt shout, check with your vet. glad to hear all is back to normal.
