Wingclipping, your opinion?  Reply with quote

I was wondering about your opinion about clipping a bird's wings.. Smile What do you think of it? Do you think it's bad?
And how do you clip? One wing? Or do you leave the outside wings because you think this is 'prettier'?
Or do you have another way of clipping?

you know its funny i was going to post a question on this..lol.. The new tiel I have just got is the first clipped bird Ive really had experience with when I got him the guy had the wings taped because thats how he trained but I think it was awful the poor thing couldnt even strech so i got my friend to come yesterday and clip them for me (she does her budgies) but I dont know if its right??? he can still fly??? should he be able to or didnt she take off enough??? any way back to your question I think its up to what kind of pet you want and what kind of bird I would never clip toby because he is such and active bird and he is such a good flier and loves it so much I couldnt take it from him but down side he will never be a bird that sits on your shoulder or what ever for a cuddle!! But i think I will keep astrix clipped because he is less active and is fun to have a "tame" baby to play with.

Yeah like this question,as a trained bird even though free flight is the best, unless you can spend the time Question to train your bird to come back l find it's more the clipped way for me. Example:With Lielow previously she was a free flight bird, but was confined to the house and garage, good. But I feel the bird ends up being boring after time in my opinion(just think of it as yourself house detention).I found because she was confined to her home and garage after time there was nothing to stimulate her even though we played it wasn't enough same background and so she became destructive to pass the time. Now with Mylo who is clipped l find he is calm and sleeps more in the afternoon when we are out, because he travels everywhere with me,because he's stimulated enough.Sometimes like today, l felt he was over stimulated after l went to the beach with him,pet shop, visit friend etc.but l knew he was happy for he snuggles up next to me on my hand and sleeps on my bed with me while l watch T.V.Mylo has the same freedom as me after work and weekends for everywhere l go he goes, this l could not do with a free flight bird that wasn't trained to come back to me outside it's boundaries(even though l was lucky with Lielow once when sher escaped but that's another story.... So clipped is for me Wink

I think it just depends. I f you are trying to train a bird, then cliped wings would be better. I all so think that if you have little kids that are in and out all the time, that for safty reasons cliped wings would be better. My CAG has his wings cliped, only because i have not had him that long and in order to work with him it's better if he cant take off when he feels like it.By time his wings grow back,we will all ready be bonded and there will be no reason that he needs them kept cliped. They love to fly and i hate to take that away from them for ever but like i said some times it's in their best interest to keep their wings cliped.I have no kids here,so when my birds are out,i know that they will not be flying out an open door. I did the same thing with my LB and Tiel, they both have their flight back and it works out good, infact they use their wings to fallow me around the house.

My B&G macaws wings were clipped when I got him & I had them clipped after they grew out. However, they've since then grown out again & I decided to leave them unclipped.

But a couple of weeks ago he took off flying from our couch & smacked his wing hard trying to get through a door way. I checked & his wing was OK, but he was upset. So I sat down with him again, & right away, he took off again!! This time he smacked right into the wall above our mantle & I was so upset & scared, that I had to put him in his cage. Several times since then, he has made motions like he's going to take off flying again, but now I put my hand in front of him to stop him. DANG!! If he persists with the motions, I put him back in his cage for fear that he will take off & really get hurt!

So I'm going to get him in to be clipped again real soon. In fact, I think I'll call today to set up an appt with the vet.

Like others here have stated, it's probably not the best, or right thing to do, but I don't think it's the worst thing to do either. I think it's basically a matter of personal circumstance.

I opt not to clip. My M2 unfortunately clips her own wings, if you know what I mean, so she is unable to fly. If she ever does stop feather snapping I will allow her wings to grow. My MSC2 and my G2 have a full set of flight feathers. My MSC2 has never had all her wing feathers for her 15 years of life until she came to live here and I don't have heart to clip them now. My G2 is pretty good at maneuvering around while flying in the house. His also will never be clipped. The draw back to this is they will also never be allowed outside until I get an aviary but with the high rate of west nile in our area its probably better to keep them inside. Karen

I don't clip Papug's wings. He loves to fly, it's something that he really enjoys. Right after I got him he flew into a window a couple of times and once into a wall - I was really afraid for him and almost got him clipped... But then I decided to try letting him out of his cage only after it was starting to get dark outside (it was easier during the winter since it was getting dark pretty quickly). He couldn't see much outside the windows and was not attempting to slam into the glass. Besides I think he remembered that he must have had a bad headache after the first couple of experiences when he did it... Now he is really great at flying, with all the turns and acrobatics Very Happy LOL... I would rather have him higher up than walking on the floor, I wouldn't want anyone step on him Shocked

Well, I can see the good and the bad in not having their wings clipped. When I first got my lovebirds, their wings were clipped, and they were easy to train. However as time went on I let their feathers grow out and never got them clipped again. They loved flying and I would allow them to fly all over the house. However, this made them more independant, and I think almost gave them a superiority complex, and they became a little nippy as well. They still loved sitting on my sholder and and hands, but don't like cuddles so much anymore. When I brought home my CAG, Bunny, my lovebirds kept flying over to him, even when he was in his cage, as soon as I let them out they would fly to his cage. So for their own safety, I got their wings clipped again. Immediately after getting them clipped again, they became so much more tame and well behaved and stopped trying to bully Bunny. Now their feathers are coming in again, and again they keep flying over Bunny's head and trying to torment him Rolling Eyes So I will get them clipped again. As for Bunny and my U2, Looloo, I will always have them clipped because I worry that they will develope superiority complexes as well, and will be harder to tame. Also I like having the freedom of taking them outside without a harness.

It could also be unsafe for the birds to be able to fly anywhere in the house. For example they might fly somewhere where there are wires, and you can't reach them, and the bird might chew on the wires and electricute him/herself.

Oh, West Nile!! Wouldn't that just be awful!!

You know, I have debated & debated with myself on the wing clipping issue!

Papug, that is a good idea to only let him out of the cage when it's dark, I can see where that makes a lot of sense. Manu is out of his cage basically all day long as macaws are really just too large to spend much time in the cage. Plus, I go to bed at 10 ish, so it wouldn't give him long out. But I have noticed that he has only tried flying when he is in the living room, never when he's in his bird room.

I just DON'T know! I now have sched an appt. to get Manus wings clipped Tues. I guess that's the route I'll go for now.

My 'tiels wings have never been clipped, but he doesn't fly much & does real well whenever he does.

Cathy, I let Papug out of the cage any time of the day now whenever I'm at home. He doesn't fly much either, but I can tell that he just loves to stretch out his wings and do a couple of rounds around the living room right after he gets out of his cage Very Happy He doesn't like to go to the other rooms or to the kitchen, so he stays in the living room most of the time unless I physically take him to a different room.
I can see a problem for the larger parrot though... Their wing span is much bigger and they can hurt themselfs or swipe things from furniture. I guess it's safer to clip in cases like this.

Well, in Manus case, I think it is safer. He was just never given the opportunity to learn how to fly. Now, maybe he could still learn, I really don't know, but I'm SO afraid of him getting hurt in the process! Altho, I guess even little kids do take their bumps while learning to walk.

So it has been a dilema for me, & I'm sure for some others as well Rolling Eyes ! But, for now I will get his wings clipped.

LOL Papug, talk about swiping things!! You should have seen the stuff that went flying when Manu landed on the mantle!! Nothing was damaged, but, oh! Manu & I were both just in shock! YIKES!

None of my birds have their wings clipped right now. I have a cat and I want the teils to be able to get away from her if she ever gets to them (probably not going to happen because she's not allowed to be in the same room as them). Before I had her I had the tiels clipped. I let my macaws feathers grow out because he never had a chance to learn how to fly and I think thats just sad. Now he is really good at it and he can fly from the living room to the kitchen but its making me really nervous because he is out most of the time and I don't want him to fly into a window or out the door.I am planning on getting his wings clipped soon.

LOL birdgirl, that's exactly how I feel about my macaw. I wanted him to have a chance to learn to fly, but now I'm just too nervous about it!

He's getting his wings cliiped on Tues.
