Advice to Help Convince Parents to Let You Have Parakeets  Reply with quote

I really, REALLY want parakeets, but my parents won't let me, or their really reluctant. They think that parakeets are loud, annoying birds, even though i try to convince them that their not! Maybe you fellow bird, espeically parakeet, lovers could give some advice, like what to tell my parents about parakeets so that i could get them. Please tell me about how to convince my parents that parakeets are not feathered monsters Twisted Evil ,(even if they don't really think their monsters) and that they're really feathered angels! Heart

Thx for all you people, nad please let all your advice help me!

Hi Amanda... welcome Smile

Well, that is a tough one... I mean, the truth is, if they really have a prejudice against birds, it might not be easy to convince them otherwise. It really depends why they don't want a bird.

First, I am wondering... how old are you?

Do you have any pets now?

Do you think that maybe your parents are just afraid that they will end up being the ones to take care of the bird, despite your good intentions?

I have an idea... Idea Maybe you could find some cute videos of pet budgies (parakeets) on YouTube or something, and show your parents how cute, smart, cuddly, etc, they can be! That might help soften them if they saw the positive side with their own eyes Smile [/i]

Budgies i think are very noisy! Constant contact calls, chriping all the time. I have an aviary outside my bedroom and the budgies wake me up so early, even though we have double glazing.
Amanda can you get your parents down to a bird store and see all the tame birds, maybe that would help?

I think maybe like you said, your parents are afraid that you will tire of the bird and THEY will end up taking care of it, which it sounds like they don't want to. They don't want a bird themselves. I think they will need convincing that you will keep this commitment to the bird for the rest of it's life which can be more or less 10 years. Have you had a pet in the past in which you failed to keep up your end of the bargain, and make your parents think that way??

Actually no, well once i had a hamster, but it actually died from stress or something because i got a cat and my cat would keep standing on my hamster's cage and everything. Also, right noe i have a cat, and my cat's very healthy, he was a stray that we rescued. Also, i'm usually very responsible, at least i think so...and my parents definitely trust me.

Well then good luck to you... Very Happy I hope your parents will agree. Do you have any older relatives (aunt, uncle, etc) who can maybe take your side and talk to your parents about letting you finally get a pet of your own?
If you get it, be very careful with the cat too... any cat can be a predator to a tiny bird.
