I think that's a really good rule! If i get a parakeet, i might just do that. You see, i also have a cat, my family rescued him from the streets. |

Another rule I have is a Scottish proverb, "Lock your doors to keep your neighbors honest." I have a strong plastic clip I use on the cage door every time I leave just in case I need to keep the cats honest. |

hello
i have been keeping cats for more than 5 years so let me tell u, i have 25 birds in different cages at a time an african grey and 2 indoor siamese,
When my grey was out of the cage flying around( he used to remove his leg band that ties him to the perch, very intelligent he was) they used 2 watch him closely may be run behind him but never a distance closer than a metre...
Now i have a ringneck and one cat again she doesnt come close to the cage she looks and observes from a distance and when the bird is out of the cage she just looks around him, but remind u please stay around, i tell u why?
Cats are hunters by nature GOD created them like that so u never predict what a cat will do next no matter how tame or nice she is she can try playing with him in a harsh way (paws) so he may get hurt or die of panic....
I also have 2 cats outside in the garden just feeding them when they are there
To summsrize keep a bird as a pet but when shes out of the cage keep an eye on her and be ready to rescue her,,,,
keep a good cage heavy and high enough not on ground level and by itself so the cats cant climb on anything next to it and then on the cage.
notice ur cats expressions as they cool or are they overactive when shes arround
willin to hear from u soon

My cats' expressions when watching the bird are pretty much the same as a person watching a mildly entertaining TV show or a tank full of fish. However, I don't assume that my cats have evolved beyond the hunter instinct. Even if they had, one could never assume that they could guess that a friendly pat might easily squash a parrotlet! If I have a problem here, it is the parrotlet, who obviously thinks of the cats as part of the flock. She is absolutely fearless, and has no concept of how small 28 grams is when compared to an 11 pound cat or a 111 pound person. |
