Anyone know of these birds? I have a pair and don't know a thing about them except they are of the parakeet family. I know they sure are pretty.

The thing that I have found with my male derbyan is that he is very, very smart and does not like the bottom of the cage like everything you find says they do. He also starting talking before the age of one and talks up a storm and it is pretty much clear like the amazons. He learns fast and anything I teach him to say he says within a week. He doesn't like people food either. I spray him with a water bottle each day. His beak is still black and starting to turn back to the orange color. He is funny but in order to keep them tame and not to bite you have to handle them a lot every single day. I learned that the hard way. I read it on more than one web site and starting to get him back used to being handled though no matter he will give me kisses through the cage and out of the cage. Have to really know of the bird in order to keep them a good bird and get your moneys worth and they are very good talkers. But also to note they are placid and a one person bird.

Razz Derbyan Parakeets
Psittacula Derbiana

This is something else I have found, but this is it, very hard to find info. on them.
--------------------------------------------------------------------------------
The Derbyan Parakeet (like most other Parakeets) originates from different parts of Africa and Asia.
These birds are by far the most exotic of the large Parakeets. They are large in size (about the same size as an Alexandrine,) and have markings similar to the Moustache Parakeet. They have long, slender, compacted bodies, have medium-green coloured backs, dusty blue chests (the female's chest is more of a rose colour.) Their blue heads are comlimented with a pastel green around their eyes, as well as a black band on their foreheads, and chins. They are sexually dimorophic, by the colour of their beaks. The females' is black in colour, while the males' is a bright, dark orange which is almost red in colour.

These birds are incredible chewers, and if wooden nest boxes are given to them, be prepared to either replace them regularly, or to reinforce them with a harder, and stronger material. It's of my personal opinion though, to just provide metal nest boxes.

Many owners have complained of these birds destroying toys within hours of receiving them. One owner told of how her Derbyan chewed up a toy meant for the strongest macaws within an hour. It's because of this, I suggest you put a strict limit on your budget. Don't nessasarily buy "new" materials for your Derbyan to destroy. Use scrap peices of wood from around the house, or even old dog toys. Be creative as to what you give to your bird. Just remember that a bird doesn't care how pretty a wooded toy is. They all look the same to them- just one more thing to destroy!!

These aren't the cuddliest of birds. If you want a snuggly bird, then I suggest you buy a Cockatoo. If you want a good-talking, beautifully coloured, very amusing pet, who will eagerly sit on a shoulder or an arm for hours- then these birds are for you!

Thank you so much for the information that is the most I have on these birds. I'm gonna talk to the guy I got them from and see if he has anything in writting on them. I know they sure are pretty and I wish now I would have kept them in the house. I love to hear them chirp and whistle. I hope the eggs hatch. I haven't checked today cause I don't want to distrub her in the box so I'll wait when I catch her out to check to see if she has any more. The only time I checked she had 2 eggs! Asked if I was going to hand feed them I decided not to because I dont know anything about that and I sure don't want to hurt them. I'll wait and just enjoy them as they would being raised by their parents this time. Thanks again for all the info.
