| Clipped Secondary Feathers |
|
|
My freddy had (regrettably) one wing clipped when he was about 4 months, the man clipped alot of feathers and left 2 on the end, well he molted now and the primary feathers came out but their 3 or 4 sencondary feathers that i have noticed are still clipped. I clipped only the primarys below the converts and these secondarys are cut right at the shaft.
So if your still with me that means the man clipped these when he was a baby, so im just wondering why these feathers havn't fallen out when he molted?
Anyone else experienced this? Do they molt all their feathers?

Yes we had this problem with Willow our little sun conure. The place we got her from had clipped into her secondary feathers. At the time we didn't know this and she started molting her flight feathers and getting new ones but they didn't have protection as the secondary ones hadn't molted yet. Anyways she had a hard time and her feathers kept breaking or getting broken. Eventually after about a year she is fully flighted and I am so happy to see her flying. We were really afraid that it would never happen. |

Yes they can fly, But they have to be adjusted to it before they will, just like anything new. Get one, write to him direct, tell him the weight and the type bird and he will recommand the correct size. Then when you get it, go down to the pet store, and get some dog leshes (sp) that match the Avaitor, Make some toys with these leshes. allow him to play with it. Basicly follow the instructions in the Video and he will be fine.
Also consider Recall training. It is not like Free Flight, but close. Basicly you teach your bird to always fly back to you on command, (always). Then if he gets away for what ever reason, you can get him to fly back to you.

When I got Apollo one of his wings was butchered like your little Fredy. it took well over a year to get all his feathers back. He got his primary back much sooner than the secondary, and I Think he molts his primary feathers twice before molting his secondary flight feathers.
Birds do eventually change all their feathers, but not all at the same time obviously. it takes time. Little Fredy will fly again. |
