Sometimes I think when people don't want their birds anymore, they just use the excuse that they don't have enough time... Instead, they should just tell the truth and say that they're just not into them anymore. I've had lots of times in my life during the 14 years that I've had parrots that I didn't really have enough time... but if they are taught what to expect from the beginning, and are not spoiled rotten, they are very adaptable creatures. While it's not ideal for any pet, they will be okay if you take care of them, show you love them, and they have plenty of fun toys. I'd never get rid of my birds, cause I know that someday in the future my schedule and life should change once again, and we will have more time together. Believe me, they do just fine. Smile

I have to disagree with you Julie. That may be the case for some people, but sometimes lack of time really is a valid reason for re-homing a beloved pet. Life is unpredictable, and situations change.

I too have said many times that I could never part with my birds, and I hope that I never have to. But recently I was forced to go back to work, while I'm still in school full time. My step-mom is terminally ill, and she is in a palliative care home now which is very expensive, and with our new higher mortgage payments, we are really struggling to make ends meet, so we all have to work a lot. There are days when I leave to go to school at 7, and don't get home until past midnight from work. That's a good 4 days out of the week. And during those days, my birds are in their cages all day long. It's especially hard on Bunny, because she is alone. At least the lovebirds, and doves are all in pairs. But Bunny is really suffering. Spoiled or not, toys or not, it's unnatural for any bird to have to spend 17 hours straight in a cage alone. I'm not there to change their waters if they get dirty during the day. I'm not there to spend time with them. There are days when I'm just so exhausted when I get home, that I don't even feel like changing the papers. And I know that Bunny is not fine, because on those days that I'm away all day, she chews her feathers.

My situation is not going to last forever, because my step-mom doesn't have that much time left. So as difficult as it is for me to watch my birds suffer, I'm hanging in there. But if it was going to last longer, I think it would almost be selfish of me to let my birds suffer and live the majority of their lives in cages, just because I didn't want to part with them. Sometimes re-homing really is the best thing for the bird, and I try not to judge anyone who is put in that situation, until I know the full story.

Shirin, I'm sorry to hear about your situation... I do understand where you are coming from! I'm so sorry about Bunny too Comfort

Wow... with that perspective, I will not feel busy that I work 10 hour days 4 days a week and am out of the house a lot on my days off... that is nothing like what you are going through. Hang in there Shirin, it will eventually get easier for all of you. I guess I am fortunate that my birds in particular are fine with my schedule... they are caged a lot too, and even when their door are open, they like to go back in their cages a lot. I have to keep Gryffin in there most of the time or she flies onto Starion's cage all the time and nearly gets attacked by Starion! She is fine, I am very lucky for that. Please do your best to stay healthy with your schedule. I imagine you are getting winter break from school soon?

Crying or Very sad Thank you Julie. I am trying my best right now. It's a very stressful time. But yes, my winter holidays actually just started this weekend, and I don't go back to school until January 3rd, so I'm planning on spending a lot of time with my birdies Very Happy

When i was young & at my parents' we had Finches, Canaries & then a Budgie. I really wanted a Tiel but my parents were not going to go there.

Now my parents have 2 Tiels & I decided Budgies are for me despite all the other wonderful Parrots & birds available. I got 1 & then about a year later I got another one.

Budgies are easy going birds - bright eyed & there are so many varieties - colour wise as well as Show/English or Standard/American. They sing & are almost always cheerful & when they are crabby - well it is pretty easy to deal with. Laughing I can also allow my birds out time almost 100% of the time.
